Generate Characters in unreal

Has any one got any tips how to create character for unreal 4 ready to use with the mannequin skeleton, in the most simple way, I’m looking for a speedy pipeline so I don’t have to keep looking for too many plug ins and encounter bone issue. Ideally a generator (not metahuman) so I can focus on game creation yet have a unique character. I have tried Send to unreal but this errors witch creating new root bones by creating a bone out of the heading Armature (renaming wont solve) just a loop or bone errors. In unity my pipe line is just Makehuman (with a plug in) blender export and just works. Meta Human sees a bit much for what I’m doing I just want cartoony 3d characters like I normally make in Makehuman.

So the biggest problem your looking at is the learning curve necessary to develop a character development pipeline and there is no real “simple” way taking into consideration of all the things that your actor needs to do. As a tip I would suggest that you first update to Unreal 5 as it does have the tools in the box that makes it easier to add your own custom character using tools like run time retarget so all of your actors work off the base UE mannequin.

For our project we found that Daz Studio along with the Geneses 9 framework works well as to our needs and spent a few years learning what we could do with DS/G9 that would result in a usable character that would output the kind of workable assets to plug into our character framework that would make things easier.

To answer the first real question I’m guessing would be “Is Daz Studio worth the time and effort to learn in producing the assets I need?” the answer is yes as to the learning curve we had to go through based on need.

Since it’s free for both DS and G9 you can get it here just for a look see.

Once you figure out hoe to send to Unreal you can then attach to the run time retarget like this

The questions to ask then are what is it that you need to be able to do as in my experience is yes you can as anything you could do can be done using G9

About 2 to 3 years of learning things.

During which you’ll realize that Unreal is trash and you are better off making whatever you want with your own skeletal structure rather than follow the trash that Epic gives you

Re “send to unreal” dont even bother.
Just export from blender after learning what the right settings are - and be aware, epic trashed the import pipeline recently, so you need to google how to go back to the previous one in order to have succesful FBX imports
