Unity released awesome bunch of VR scenes, starting with basic scene with basic GUI and back menu, and ending with a few simple games that incorporate interactive GUIs, locomotion and basic gameplay. All optimized for mobile VR (including Gear VR). Ready for deployment - load it, deploy it, play test it. Almost ready to be released in Oculus Store
Can Epic be mega-awesome and release something like that too? An optimized set of templates-examples for Gear VR / Galaxy S6, with GLES 3.x and ASTC compression, with interactive GUIs (gaze controlled or/and bluetooth gamepad controlled or/and controlled with gaze + touchpad on GVR) and various types of locomotions (moving with gamepad and blink, just blink, etc.) ?
Wow, come on Epic. It took me an hour or so to gut FPS template to get it running on Gear VR (although with poor performance). I can’t believe you won’t provide any FPS templates specifically set up to run on Gear VR at 60 fps rock solid (with scene not just filled up with cubes, but more realistically setup template scene with max of 100k tris in the view and max of 60 drawcalls).

It’s been roughly 5 month since OP and since there are is very little progress on Gear VR side in general (not even talking about examples), it’s safe to assume in the next 5 month things won’t suddenly change.
However, 5 month was plenty enough of time to get my Gear VR project’s core functionalities up and running
