Gameplay Animation Sample Root Motion from Everything breaks motion

I built a project on top of GAS, in 5.5, and had a weird issue when switching the ABP to use “root motion from everything”. I could not figure it out, so as a sanity check, I opened a brand new version of the GAS in 5.5, and tried it there – same issue.

The problem is when root motion from everything is selected on the character ABP, the character has a hard time moving, almost as if the capsule surround the character is causing a collision. The behavior is similar to to walking into a wall, where the character stops moving.

I even tried changing collision settings, but to no avail. Anybody can reproduce this by setting “Root motion from everything” in the GAS on the class defaults, not the instance.

Any ideas? After searching for this for weeks, I have yet to see someone encounter this in the GAS.

I thought it could maybe be the:

  1. the capsule
  2. something to do with the IK setup

If I fire off an animation with root motion, the root motion of the animation works properly, as expected, but the character movement controller, aka moving the character around seemingly runs into an invisible wall.
