Gamedev Blues.

Sup guys. I dunno if this has been done before, and I’m sure everyone does it in their blogs… of course they don’t! It’s that time of night, and I figured, why not do the equivalent of a bar for depressed devs. Yanno. The kindly old bartender cliche, only in this case it’s not a bunch of adventurers who just annihilated a countrie’s standing army worth of thugs in the slums, it’s game devs… who got annihilated, by the greatest bossfight of all. Game’s dev. Did the project eat itself alive because you misplaced a curve? Did the AI decide to become sentient and rebel? Does that menu even work? Where did I put my towel? Who knows. Welcome to the place where everyone totally gets you.

So be ye young or old. Pull up yer bar stool, grab the grog and get harping. I’m sure someone will listen.

Now please excuse me while I weep into my ‘day job’ because I don’t have enough time to fulfill the impossible impossibles I want to fulfill. Making this happen. To summarise pithily. Trees maketh for a beautiful frame. Tis sad that sad frame doth not continue to the next. 60 fps is easy they said. It’ll be like playing a game they said. And we’re doing a multiple fps. All I can think while we add more and more features is just how many pitchforks are being sharpened outside and how much of a lynching the public will decide to go with once we go live. Physically based duelling in real time. Awww yeah. Totes gonna be easy… on a ping of 30. I’m sure the American’s get that… right? Can you even make players be nice to each other? Like, is it possible? It always feels bad that you have to assume everybody who logs in is a violent sociopath who will abuse everything for maximum personal gain. It’s like controlling a crowd of rowdy 2 year olds. How long till reality nukes us with the lolzors. In fact when? How long will flying by the seat of our pants last for us? Ah well. I guess when you pile up the sticks, hand your players the flaming torches and tie yourself to the stakes, it’s really inevitable that something goes up in flames right? Baaaah. Where’s the whisky.

Sounds like you’ve already had enough lol

Game dev is hard, if it was easy it probably woudn’t be worth doing. And to quote Billy Ocean “When the going gets tough, the tough get going!”

In due consideration, all jobs are hard. The difference with game dev is a lot of people are doing it without adequate recompense for their work. For me, it’s my favourite work, and I’ve hopped a lot of difference careers. Still, I think people should be allowed to kick the table coz GlaDoS got the neurotoxin again.

A game dosent happend over night, well for Nintendo with their skills it may does when they teamed up with Unity3D. Last I heard was that they had over 50 games for PlayStation Vita and thats what I feared when I heard that Nintendo did team up with Unity3D. But for games like Battlefield 4 and GTA it takes years and years and a 500+ team to develope.
