I am a huge patron of the marketplace, buying stuff all the time to see how it works, so I agree that more marketplace content is good.
Yet I think what you are looking for is not the sort of systems that are most helpful to a full game development.
The most helpful systems are limited scope single purpose systems that can be easily molded into your own code.
Massively scoped templates just lead to people releasing games that they don’t understand and hounding authors to add their personal desires to an increasingly largely scoped asset.
@WalkingDead
If your costs are really so low it could possibly work out if you make a highly valued asset on a consistent basis.
Wow this is awesome
I live in Trinidad and Tobago which is in the Caribbean I have my own house so $300 a month is quite perfect. These days as I am not employed I spend around $200 US a month which means I can’t really use the AC. Something to note we don’t pay taxes here and water is unlimited and free once you live in the country side like I do. My brother and I split the internet bill and I just run a long LAN cable to his house next door.
The bill is $30 USD a month for a 60mbps Fibre Broadband connection. I also cook my own food because I like healthy stuff and am trying to lose weight so yeah $300 a month? that makes me king. lol
It a formidable debate with the marketplace, typical game development length, bills to pay and where struggling indie developers sit in between.
Many developers that have decided to do a project for the next 2 years end up going past their deadlines. now the market place I think is a great place but as people here have said, the flexibility isn’t there and everyone may end up with identical projects using the store. awkwardly enough however, many developers who do start from scratch end up making a “genre” type game that we have played before. chances if you went to the same architect school similarities will also be there too. so there are quite a few common core aspects of game development that do occur for every developer, and it’s these common tasks that should be the focus in the marketplace. if they’re made with enough flexibility I think projects could differ and receive proper boosts to progress as they should in development. -my two cents.
its actually growing pretty fast and EPIC has made sure that it contains good content. Its a new thing so , give it a couple of years and come back and then we can discuss about it.
By the way you dont need just Unreal Marketplace, there like a ton of websites out there that offer assets like turbosquid. It should not be hard to convert Unity assets to Unreal either. Its all about being flexible
I wonder how a learning assets for UE4 with full tutorials (much like a course online of some sort) would sell? I wonder if many people wold play to learn?
also $300 a month in expanses , if you live in Australia you would probably be living in a garage can with that amount,
I just bought this book for 50 euros
So yes people do buy tutorials, and I plan to buy other books for Unreal, I have this one on pre order
Dont forget there are Universities that make a fortune out of education
I have look into online curses, I was wondering if it could be sold as a marketplace asset short tutorials / modules covering more advance topics,
I do believe, maybe I’m very wrong, but I believe tutorials are waayy less pirated then 3D Assets. So yeah, it’s a good time investment I guess.
I never make tutorials because I have none of a teacher spirit.
The good thing about pirated assets is that you can issue a DMCA take down easily these days. All you have to do is browse the forums that upload 3D assets and report the links. Same for torrents.
I am a believer of people who pirate software are never going to buy it in the first place and even if they do they would never pay anywhere near your asking price.
I guess a digital bible complete with a glossary and dictionary on blueprints wouldn’t be a bad idea for the marketplace. it’s the next to best thing having all the tricks of the trade. there is one major problem to this though; the number of updates to UE4. I spent 3 months watching a whole bunch of video tutorials and had to quit most of them, because of how everything has changed in the later versions. In fact a large portion of vids on youtube have become a bad source for blueprint learning, resulting in lots of questions.
whoever tackles the digital bible of UE4 should be flexible enough to updated it when necessary. otherwise it’s a antique purchase.
For other marketplace ideas. some more genre type templates would be great for indies. blueprints remain a heavy topic and accounts for a huge portion in all projects. more blueprint related subjects i think should be in the marketplace. IMO art assets don’t nearly take out as much time from game development as scripting does.
Other popular requests:
“Movie production is still too slow; we need better stock footage selections!”
“Car design is still too slow; we need more Lego blocks for cars!”
While that may be true for the high-end content and apps, it actually hurts the smaller developers.
If the option is “pay $300 for a smaller-featured 3D modeler, or $3000 for 3ds Max,” then the smaller company would make a living.
If the option is “Pirate the $3000 program for free, or pay $3000 for 3ds Max” then there is no room for the $300 smaller program.
Same goes for music, movies, and anything else that is hard to produce and easy to copy.

This just isn’t the right place for this thread i guess…
And actually it really isn’t, there is a dedicated section for the Marketplace and ideas.
Anyways Epic expressed the marketplace in it’s FAQ. People have the choice of publishing whatever tools they want accessible, so long as it’s relevant to UE4. Naturally everything in the marketplace will have a different purpose and different opinions attached to them. some people fear the marketplace leads to games having similarities, we already have similarities in games - they’re called “genres”. and the moment you attempted to explain what your project is to everyone; you have already categorized your project. And others fear game development would be too easy if it were more simplified. UE4 aims to simplify as it is, and nobody here would be bothering with it if it wasn’t as accessible.
I have a saying
“If its not easy, it’s a bug”
My type of talking.
I’m sure lots of Ue4 programmers love the challenge of scripting and coding. I understand there is beauty in the processes. Marketplace programmers however stand to gain a payoff from their work, with also credit too. It’s not all just more work. The marketplace seems pretty democratic. and if i were a very skilled programmer i would be reading the suggestions of a few places that are willing to make a purchase.
- my two cents. i’ll be in marketplace threads from now on, checking out the suggestions there.
As a programmer, I can tell you that there’s absolutely no point for me to look at the marketplace - I simply couldn’t make enough of a return for it to be a worthwhile investment of my time. It takes $1200 a month here just to make rent, let alone the actual cost of living. Also, if I were to do something, I’d be looking at doing bespoke work for studios, who will be paying considerably more than the marketplace will be paying me, and I won’t need to do infinite revisions of the project each time a version gets updated.
I do a good bit of freelance work for people using Unreal and I’m on about my 3rd gig in a row where they are all using the “third person game template” on the marketplace, just changing the models.
Wish I could but I can’t afford most market place content that would actually be useful for my project. So I put a lot of time to create my own assets and use whatever sci-fi or foliage assets Epic provides for free, and that’s what has really helped speed up my project. I’m working a part time job to make rent and all my other time is going into making my game, I think that’s the only way I’m ever gonna finish it.
