Ahh! Maybe that’s the issue with the Blender version? I’ll give it a go and reimport.
Yes it’s very possible.
It’s probably your problem…look at the UV channel 1 if I import with ‘‘combine mesh’’. It’s super messy even tho I had 16 clean uv in max!
The sofa you sent me had 16 parts, you should have 16 parts in unreal engine too!
So in Max do you select all the meshes at once and unwrap with steamroller?
It’s better but still has way too many problems with the Blender version. I can try a few different things though now I know about the UE4 combine mesh thing.
Yes if the meshes are not overly complex you can select them all and do it at once (it will generate a uv for each mesh). But if you have let’s say 100 meshes and they’re complex, sometimes max crash lol. In that case unwrap less meshes at a time!
I also uv map my mesh with a checker texture in max, if I dont know yet what material to put on a mesh. If the checker is well uv mapped, in unreal any material will end up looking good and you’ll only have to adjust the scaling.
You can have 8 uv channels in UE4 iirc. So 1 for the lightmap and 7 for textures, per mesh!!! Useful to map dirt or leaks on top of a diffuse texture!!!
Cool thanks!
hi again… i downloaded 3ds max trial version and i did what you say. i watched some tutorials and these are the results.
****this is a calender. i found it on internet. it has 4 objects in a model. i think this is not complicated object.
***i opened it on max and unwrapped on 2. channel. and collapse it. i did it for all 4 objects. and export them fbx format.
***i imported them into unreal engine as you can see…
*** here is the lightmap of an object.
and results are not good… resolution 64 is very bad… but 512 is not good too… light bleeds again… i will add final pictures
here is the final results:
res : 64
res : 512
i think these results are not acceptable. where is the problem?
I had to make the lightmap rez 2048 on the sofa to get it clean. Try higher rez lightmaps. You can also cut up the face into 4 pieces if needed.
I have to be honest until there is a way to do Archviz in UE4 without the use of the lightmap it’s going to be tough to use it in a production environment. It’s too labor intensive for the fees that clients are willing to pay. That’s just my opinion.
This is a lot of geometry for a simple calendar here!!! Do you build with production lighting quality? That’s important. The lightmap seems decent. What spacing did you use?
One good way could be to detach the front page and make 1 clean uv unwrap of it (it will use all the space since it’s a rectangle) and leave the rest of the calendar on another uv map.
Right now the downside isn’t lightmapping that much but the trials and error time lost trying to make the lighting top notch. Each test take 5-8 hours to build lol. It’s hot where I live and my computer is getting freaking hot and noisy for lonnnng hours when building the lighting.
yes i know a lot of faces for a simple calender but i think this is not the point. by the way i always use production lighting for trying something on unreal…
detaching is good idea but calender is an simple example… should i have to spend a lot of time for every object? isn’t there easier way to do it? what will i do with more complicated objects?
I’m rethinking even bothering at this point to offer VR and animations using UE4 for my clients, they’re not going to pay me what I would want do to the time/labor involved. I work with a lot of developers that do small developments like office buildings, condo buildings etc. they’re not going to pay for it.
I hear that!
Applications (.exe) and VR are not for all clients I guess. It require expensive hardware anyway. Videos on the other hand could be interesting for clients. The time/effort required to make a video compared to a still in Unreal isn’t huge. You eliminate all render costs. Better prices for your client or more money for you. You could explore 360 panoramas for gear VR too. It’s possible with unreal and SceneCaptureCube. The resolution is a bit low tho, 2048x2048 but it’s pretty cool. Again, once the scene is baked, you can make stills, videos and 360 panos without any additional cost!!!
They’re going to want an entire house for $1500.00 I bet! That ain’t gonna happen over here.
Lol yea, gonna need to find better clients I think
I just need a rich lady friend.
