I installed a fresh 5.3.2 engine, created a fresh blank project and I get 8 FPS, a video memory exhausted message and a crash after a few seconds.
As shown in the picture below, my RTX3080 10GB only uses 4GB of RAM while the ‘video memory exhausted’ message shows an increasing over budget memory message.
This is on Windows 11 with the latest NVidia drivers.
I used to get 40 to 60 FPS on my former projects under 5.1 with the same hardware.
It could be that unreal doesn’t uses the nvidia card but the card that is bundled with the CPU.
If this is the issue then this can be fixed inside various places in windows. first try nvidia panel, see if you have options that are set globally or specifically for this version of unreal editor. options to force the software to use the integrated GPU.
also windows likes to force apps to use the integrated chip to save power. There is also an option in windows to set a program to use a specific GPU. An option set by windows will be above the nvidia panel settings so if there is nothing in the nvidia settings that is wrong check that first.
if you have an intel CPU, there is also an intel GPU settings app, again check there if unreal is not forced to use a specific GPU there.
I’m on a Ryzen 9 3900X, no integrated graphics chipset IIRC, but you made me wander in my graphics card settings and for some unknown reason Unreal made it run on an unspecified setting.
I forced my high performance setting before launching the engine and everything is fine.
Kinda weird, but… oh well…
maybe the motherboard then? they usually have an integrated GPU.
what motherboard you have? maybe they have some feature to limit the GPU memory to save power but that looks funny to me. it would make more sense to limit the speed of the GPU but who knows.
I got my projects running again but it’s rally hard to figure how. After changing the mode of the GPU (on the fly, through commands) the FPS got back to normal. If I opened a content browser, the same problem arose, FPS drops to 8 and than the engine crashes.
And all of a sudden, all problems went away, I can open any project with as many browsers I want and all is fine.
Maybe this comes from the NVidia drivers, or the EVGA precision X1, no clue, but now it’s working, go figure
