Freehand Point Selection for Cleaning

Hi,

your software surpasses Agisoft’s by far in terms of speed and quality.
But unfortionately the point selection sucks balls.
The time I gain during processing I loose when I have to create all those boxes to select and remove points from unwanted geometry. Why isn’t this implemented yet? Seems like a vital feature to me.

Keep up the good work!

I don’t have to deal with this very often.
It seems to me like this is easy enough to be accomplished with other software.
I agree, it would be better to have it, but why not just export, clean it up somewhere else and import it again?
Never had issues with this step yet…

Freehand point selection for cleaning would be great! Here is an example why: The image export in RC is very powerful, but the points that close the mesh are pretty annoying (See in the attachment: First picture is a screenshot and the second picture is its render output). To do it with the filtering tool and the reconstruction region is frankly a pain—maybe I haven’t figured out how to do it correctly or in a easy/fast way. Or does anyone know how to disable the boundary points?

By disable you mean delete?
Use the Info panel to reduce the size of the box by a tiny fraction in all 3 dimensions, hit filtering, select mark all outside box (or something like that - its calculation so I cant check) and then Apply (or equivalent).
Then the worst of it schould be gone and you should be able to get at least some result from the renderer.
Everybody agrees with you though!
I think it is supposed to be improved in the future though…

Hello everyone,
the filtering tool is being improved.

What I meant is the mandatory box around the model but improving is always good!

Thank you for your update lubenko.

Do you have to retexture the model after cropping? I am asking because the Tx tag next to the model in the 1D menu is not applied although the model has color. I am guessing that has to do with the mesh export and the UV but does not affect the render? I am kind of confused since the component has color one you texture or color it.

I find that confusing too.
I think it is as you suspect - just create a quick render (Reconstruction - Export - Render) and you’ll see…

Thank you for your quick replies

Hello Jonathan,
yes, you have to retexture your model, because geometry is associated with texture (respectively with Unwrapped mesh = UV coordinates).
This applies for simplification as well.

In 3D view you can see colored mesh, because in texturing step, texture colors are baked into vertex colors. If you filter/simplify you model, you will not loose this colors and you can still see them in 3D view or you can export them into file.

This isn’t bug but more likely a bit unexpected behaviour.

I hope this helps you to understand what’s happening there.

How? Where? When? What? I mean, I can’t find anything in 1Ds that can be used to adjust size of the box, or Reconstruction Region, or Clipping box. How to activate those settings in 1Ds? Or is it somewhere else?

This rectangular outer skin we’re trying to get rid of - is it any use in any circumstances? Should it ever be preserved? If not, couldn’t RC automatically remove it? Alternatively, a 1-click way to automate its removal? How many person-hours spent, amongst RC’s customer base, doing this 6-click thing time after time?

Aha! Ribbon-Reconstruction>Selection>Advanced>1Ds-Select Large Triangles selects the rectangular outer skin, which can then be deleted by Ribbon-Tools>Filter Selection.

Have tools’ names changed?

Having got rid of the rectangular outer skin, would it be true to say that remaining unwanted triangles must indicate lack of info due to inadequate photos? Is that why Götz Echtenacher says:

“I don’t have to deal with this very often.”
