I’ve been looking for some free or inexpensive assets, more specifically characters. Maybe I’m looking in all the wrong places, but I’m just looking for something to use temporary so I can get an idea of what my scene will look like and worry about the modeling at a later time. Anyone point me in the right direction?

Yes, as said have a look on the Marketplace tab of the UE4 launcher, there is a Mixamo Character pack, containing 15 free characters with basic walk/jump/idle etc animations, and they are usable right out of the box. Highly recommend downloading and playing with these!

No problem! Remember as well that you can download any of the other items on the maketplace, and use the assets contained within them for your own projects (even if you were to sell your game, it is allowed, see the FAQ for more details), so be sure to download and take apart as many of the projects as you can, both for the assets, and also for a great learning experience by taking them apart to see how they work.
