Force merging aligned lidar scans?

Hi, I have been very impressed by RC for handling massive amount of point clouds and the speed of alignment as well.

However I have a few hit and miss with aligning point clouds exported to ptx.

This are my questions:

  1. Setting control points does not seem to help with the alignment at all for lidar scans. Can anyone confirm this?
  2. I can align my scans in faro scene and import them as a ptx file into RC, but RC will always try to re-align my point clouds which doesn’t work. Can I force RC to generate point cloud without trying to align? Since they are already aligned in faro scene.

The only reason I want to mesh my point clouds in RC is because it can handle really high res poly without memory issue and I want to conserve as much details as possible. Do someone have any pointers for this kind of cases?

Thanks in advance!

Hi Keith

Just import them as EXACT ( it will use the already existing registration from an external app ) but you need to use ALIGNMENT anyway, it will detect features but it will keep the existing external registration.
Try it and report back.

Why are you trying to use control points? just because the alignment is falling apart ( used DRAFT, UNREGISTERED on imports ??)

This is what I did:

  1. Import aligned ptx
  2. Used alignment with default options
  3. RC splits out 4 separate components

I used control point in a desperate attempt because I can’t get RC to align my scans no matter what settings I used.

EDIT: My bad! I forgot to change the import option to “Registered”.

It is all good now. Thanks!
