Focusing on goals. What should I do?

I would like to use unreal4 to make RPGs, mostly open-world. There is so much stuff to look at and I’m wondering what to look at if I’m mainly doing that. I know, there’s basics but if I want to achieve my dream of combining aspects of skyrim and dragon age I want to know what I’m gonna need after basics.

Have you tried modding Skyrim? Your question is vague. Look at Skyrim modding and you’ll understand better how a game like that is made. After the basic comes advanced, lots of advanced…

Actually you will have to look at everything ^^ -> you will need level design, programming, 3d artist, fx artist,… skills. So the best way would be to search a team that wants to develope the game with you, because otherwise it will take ages to finish the game

Also do “field studying” -> so go into those games and find out how everything works. Dont just play it, always think about the background

I was involved in some open world RPG-Zombie-projects, R.I.P. halfway up.
For me its only interesting to having fun while developing small projects together.
If at the end of the road comes some money back, it would be nice.
A small doom clone like ziggurat with unique art style dream
For you alone it would be better to start with small projects too.
Open world is nice but you need to fill it up with many different assets to bring it to life…

Welcome to the forums!

It’s almost impossible for a single person to develop a whole open world RPG because you would
have to be a programmer, 3D artist, sound engineer and level designer all in one.

You should focus on what you like the most (e.g. programming), practice a lot and
become better - then look for teammates who want to join your project.

:stuck_out_tongue: It is possible, but it will take ages

Theoretically everything is possible, it’s just a question of the likelihood :stuck_out_tongue:
Basically you’re right,

It is possible to make a RPG like Skyrim just on your own, but in reality it is
very unlikely that somebody is talented and interested in programming, 3D
modeling, sound engineering AND level designing.
Well, even if you are, it would take you decades to develop such a game

For example you could hire 3D artists so they make all required assets for
your RPG project, but I don’t think that a single person has got so much money
(except you won in lottery)

That’s why the conventional method would be to focus on one or two of the jobs
mentioned above and to look for teammates.
