Final Environment Update

Hello everyone,

This marks the completion of my final environment project for the Video Game Art course.

Over the course of the semester this project changed considerably. It originally began as a corrupted temple environment inspired by the Fox Quest area from Black Myth: Wukong. As development progressed and after receiving feedback from my professor, I realized the scene was trying to communicate too many ideas at once. Combining corruption, evergreen vegetation, and snow resulted in an environment that lacked a clear artistic direction.

Rather than continuing with the original concept, I decided to simplify the narrative and focus entirely on creating a winter temple environment. This decision allowed me to spend more time refining the atmosphere, composition, and lighting while keeping the modular architectural foundation developed throughout the project.

What was completed

  • Designed and assembled a modular temple complex.
  • Created the main shrine as the focal point of the environment.
  • Built supporting architecture including residential buildings, gates, towers, walls, and the central courtyard.
  • Modeled and textured hero props such as the weapon rack and courtyard assets.
  • Added snow-covered vegetation and environmental dressing to improve depth and composition.
  • Refined the lighting to create contrast between the cool winter ambience and the warm lantern illumination.
  • Implemented snowfall using Niagara to reinforce the atmosphere.
  • Produced cinematic cameras and a playable walkthrough for presentation.

Tools Used

  • Unreal Engine 5
  • Autodesk Maya
  • Substance Painter
  • Photoshop
  • DaVinci Resolve

What I Learned

This project taught me much more than creating individual assets. It helped me understand the importance of iteration and being willing to change direction when a concept is not working.

Throughout the project I improved my understanding of:

  • Modular environment creation
  • Environment composition
  • Lighting and atmosphere
  • Material creation
  • Environmental storytelling
  • Scene optimization
  • Planning a complete environment production pipeline
