UE WEEKLY report
Environment Development
-
The project has transitioned from a generic snow village environment into a cultivation-sect-inspired settlement, establishing a stronger visual identity through architecture, worldbuilding, banners, and environmental storytelling.
-
Expanded the Frost Moon Sect village by integrating additional residential and supporting buildings around the central courtyard.
-
Improved the overall layout and spatial composition, creating a stronger sense of scale and settlement.
-
Added environmental dressing including lanterns, trees, pathways, banners, and architectural details to reinforce the sect identity.
-
Continued development of the central courtyard and surrounding circulation spaces.
-
Improved the visual hierarchy of the environment, helping direct the viewer’s attention toward key landmarks and gathering spaces.
-
Established a clearer relationship between the gate, central hall, and supporting buildings, allowing the environment to read more like a functioning sect rather than a collection of structures.
Hero Asset Development
-
Further integrated the Frost Moon banners throughout the environment to strengthen visual storytelling and faction identity.
-
Refined banner placement to improve composition and guide the viewer’s eye through the village.
-
Used banners to reinforce the visual language and worldbuilding of the Frost Moon Sect.
-
Continued using the banners as the primary hero asset within the environment.
Gate Asset Development
-
Completed the Frost Moon Gate asset using a modular workflow.
-
Modelled, textured, and assembled modular architectural pieces including roof sections, columns, stone bases, and decorative elements.
-
Created trim sheets and materials for all modular gate components.
-
Completed UV mapping and material setup for the gate asset.
-
Produced Base Colour, Normal, and ORM texture maps.
-
Added roof snow using the Snow Clump asset from Fab.
-
Integrated the final gate into the environment as the primary entrance landmark.
-
Improved the visual connection between the entrance gate and the central sect hall through environmental composition.
-
Documented the complete workflow including references, modular construction, UV layouts, trim sheets, texture creation, and final integration into Unreal Engine.
Lighting
-
Continued refining the blue-hour lighting setup across the environment.
-
Focused on balancing cool ambient skylight with warm lantern illumination.
-
Used warm lighting to create focal points around the gate, courtyard, and central hall.
-
Lighting was informed by real-world winter blue-hour photography, where snow reflects cool skylight while artificial light sources create warm visual contrast.
-
The current setup successfully captures a winter evening atmosphere while maintaining readability and visual interest.
-
Further adjustments were made to improve depth, atmosphere, and the contrast between architectural forms and the surrounding snowy landscape.
Optimisation
-
Optimised texture usage by implementing LOD Bias values of 1 and 2 based on texture size and importance.
-
Reduced texture memory requirements while maintaining visual quality at gameplay viewing distances.
-
Improved texture streaming efficiency and overall scene performance.
-
Converted material textures from separate Roughness, Ambient Occlusion, and Metallic maps into packed ORM (Occlusion, Roughness, Metallic) textures.
-
Reduced texture memory usage and material overhead while maintaining visual quality.
-
Improved material efficiency and aligned the project more closely with industry-standard Unreal Engine workflows.
-
Continued monitoring asset density and texture usage as the village expanded.
Remaining Work
-
Create and integrate final door assets for the buildings.
-
Fix UV issues present on several building base meshes.
-
Complete the final house asset and integrate it into the environment.
-
Create and implement a Niagara snow particle system.
-
Continue material, lighting, and environment polish.
-
Perform a final optimisation pass once all assets are integrated.
Naming and Worldbuilding
The environment uses a consistent naming convention centred around themes of winter, reflection, isolation, and spiritual growth.
-
霜月 (Shuāng Yuè) – Frost Moon: The name of the settlement and sect. It reflects the snowy environment, blue-hour atmosphere, and themes of discipline and reflection present throughout the world.
-
霜月山门 (Shuāng Yuè Shān Mén) – Frost Moon Gate: The ceremonial entrance to the settlement and the first major landmark encountered by visitors.
-
枯岭 (Kū Lǐng) – Withered Ridge: The mountainous region surrounding the settlement, reinforcing the harsh winter landscape and remote location of the sect.
-
迷途之地 (Mí Tú Zhī Dì) – Land of the Lost: The central hall overlooking the courtyard, representing guidance, contemplation, and personal growth.
-
听雪门 (Tīng Xuě Mén) – Listening to Snow Pavilion: A gathering space within the settlement whose name reflects the quiet and contemplative atmosphere of the Frost Moon Sect.
Together, these names support the visual identity of the environment and help establish a cohesive world centred around winter, reflection, solitude, and spiritual cultivation.
Note: While research was conducted on the meanings and cultural context of the names, feedback from a native Chinese speaker would be greatly appreciated to ensure the naming conventions, tone, and character usage feel natural and culturally appropriate.
