filepath too long

Trying to Clone a Project to Update to 5.4.2 and get error telling me file paths are too long

I have looked on internet for Win11 Home and have changed registry and group policy for long file path support, however I still cannot clone the project file.

Changing path names etc. is not an option, otherwise I would have simply done that.
Also, it seems some plugins as well (EOS EIK and another EOS plugin I have) are contributing to the problem. Windows exploerer cannot copy/paste directory or files and the UE launcher clone utility/button fails as well.

WTF!?

No one has had these issues?

Hey @blindminds!

This is something many of us have run into over the years. The best recommendation I can give is to put your projects as close to the root of the drive as possible, and try to keep file names short. This is why if you delve into installed programs, many folders will be as brief as a single character. Unfortunately, this is a limitation of Windows and Mac both, and it’s based on how many characters the file address has. There are some ways to extend it, however they can only be stored, not utilized beyond that length of ~256 chars.

You can move your project (and maybe your engine, but not necessarily) to a folder closer to the root of your drive in Windows Explorer and try again there! That’s pretty much the only easy path here. But I can confirm that I have run into this problem, and that’s what I had to do.

Hope that helps!

It’s strange how I have never in 45 years in using all sorts of professional software never run into this issue until using UE.

Would be nice if they would implement something to check plugins for folder depth and names to make sure they allow enough empty character depth to hopefully avoid the issue. I think my main problem was just plugins, which I had in the project folder (did not want them installed to engine as I have conflicts with plugins and having several projects, I wanted the specific plugins needed for each project, with the project. I moved them to engine and solved the issue.
