Fiefdom - Motte and Bailey Medieval Village

"Fiefdom is a project set in early medieval England. Based around Anglo-Saxon and Norman architecture/culture. We will be creating a real time cinematic based around a Motte and Bailey castle based on various historical references.

We will not be sticking entirely to the real world as we would like to take some liberties with what can be included in the surrounding vistas/scenery and so we can make changes for visual interest.

The surrounding area will consist of various small farms and a river running past the town. In the distance past the farmland we will have mountains visible."

The Team:

Kieran Young, Harry Biggs.

Harry will mainly be working on Substance Designer materials, foliage, general modelling/texturing, vistas, lighting and photogrammetry. Kieran will be working on the buildings, prop/building modelling, set dressing plus landscape and asset sculpting.

We are 2-3 weeks into the project and as such all textures and models are mostly unfinished or placeholder. Feel free to post feedback on what we have so far!

so far it looks good, I really like the houses. the slope of the motte seems to be too high, it could be smoothed at least at the bottom section, or it should be supported by some wooden/stone support walls. the gate of the bailey is the other problematic thing for me, gates were not so large, and some horizontal support would be needed if you want to keep it somewhat realistic. what I don’t know exactly is the structure of wooden defensive walls, these were filled up with ground in Middle and East Europe in this period, thus were really steady, but I’m not sure how these were constructed in the West.

Sorry thats an Motte

i like whta i see here.

looks promising, keep up the good work! hope you will release it to the community someday.

Not really! This is a Motte: Motte (Burg) – Wikipedia

@sivan
We have changed the gate, reduced the slope of the hill and lowered its height. We also had a small hill running around the inside of the palisade but that was temporarily removed yesterday to put the new palisade in, should be there again soon.

@Pinotti

Maybe :slight_smile:

Sorry for the lack of updates, we kept saying “we will add something else before posting” and it never happened until now.

Eventually we are going to add cart tracks, footprints and wear decals to the roads so they look less flat, I still need to sculpt some height into them. We’ll be adding grass meshes into the gaps and around the town soon so it should look more interesting.

The door is placeholder, will be making a nice final mesh soon.

We are planning to add a ton of plants and crops to the gardens at some point, these most likely wont be fully completed until summer, the pictures below are pretty much the look we’ll be going for. It should add a ton of colour and make the town feel less empty.

The layout now. The top left is going to have more farms and some wood cutting areas that we saw at mountfitchet. The bottom right next to the castle building is going to have stables and some dove cotes.

An example of the LOD’s working:

Harry’s been doing a lot of optimizations so we are currently running at around 120 pretty much anywhere in the town, this will go down a bit once we start adding foliage but we are aiming for at least 90 fps for VR.

We originally had a hill around the wall but I forgot to add it back in, that will be added back soon. I still need to do a lot of set dressing with wood piles and stuff, so the buildings should look more interesting fairly soon.

Should have a lot of progress by this weekend, although we need to dedicate pretty much all of next week to interactivity so it might be quite for a while.

Kieran made a cart. I helped the render look a little danker by adding some of the other props to the render. I also changed the skybox to something less UE4 default and changed the lighting a bit to fix with the new skybox.

Hi its been a very long time since we updated this, we still have work we’d like to do on this but we have other projects going on now. We will probably come back and polish this during summer. Hopefully you enjoy the progress :slight_smile:
