Feature Request: Setting to change FOV of 3D scene camera

Hi there, as of now I am have not found a feature, setting or button in RC that allows the user to manipulate the FOV of the 3D scene camera. Yes, there is the ability to “move” the camera in and out but, not increase or decrease the FOV so that you can see a wider view inside a small volume (like a jail cell) or closer (zoomed) view of a long corridor or road, as some examples.

This would really help the interactivity and inspection of the scene for many things. If this could be added to the SCENE ribbon this would be supper helpful.

Thanks!

Hello Sir,

Good point you have! Although with a little workaround it is possible to do that.

Pick yourself a layout with an extra window for you and change it to 4D, this is an animation sequence editing window, leave this open and navigate to other viewport in 3D here take the camera to a place where you want the keyframe position of the camera to be and hit INSERT on your keyboard.
You will notice there is a new keyframe on the timeline of the 4D window.
Click on the keyframe and a window in the 1Ds tab will open, where you can find under Camera projection parameters a Focal lenght setting.
The lower is the number the wider is the FOV and the higher the number the narrower will it be.

This normally is done for the animation purpose but you can use it to change the FOV of your view.

*To make the navigation easier keep placing your pivot by double clicking on the grid or the model.

363763927319  thank you for your reply! I can definitely do that in the meantime. I just tried it out and it works for the purpose I need now.

Thinking ahaead however, do you think this is something however that could go into RC as feature request for a future release? It seems to be something that would require not a lot of development but could really help users out as mentioned above - it would definitely require less steps for someone to change the FOV for their 3D camera :)

Thanks again for the handy information Erik!

Cheers

Pat

I really do understand your need for this feature and will try to communicate it with the developers, but I cannot promise or tell you when this will be done as they are very busy all the time. Anyways thank you for giving us a tip on improvement we appreciate it.

Erik, totally understand. I appreciate you being so helpful and honest at the same time :)

Hopefully this is something that can be intergrated at some point soon. The company I work for uses RealityCapture quite frequently now and as a big visual fx company this is a feature we feel most software packages would have for the reasons mentioned above.

Once again thank you for taking the time to help with some suggestions and following up.

Best regards!

Thought I’d comment, although the workaround works well. Why it would be useful as a specific tool is for rendering quick screenshots for clients. Or for seeing how the model is looking with a wider view than the default. Kind of Look dev use.
