[Feature Request] Paid Major Update for existing customers

Please add a feature so existing customers can buy paid upgrades at discount prices while new customers will pay full price.

I have a product and I am releasing minor upgrades and bug fixes. and customers download it free of charge. But I am also working on a new system for the same product will is going to be a major update and I want to charge for the upgrade. so people who already had version 1 can upgrade to version 2 at a discount price compared to new customers who will pay the full price for the new major product version.

Thanks for this suggestion, @Ibtesam_Sadiq ! I’ve passed it on to the team.

I’m checking to see if this has been addressed
We depend on this in other stores with our tools … all of which are code plugins so there is an ongoing cost to development and maintenance with frequent updates and live support

Directly we handled this via a subscription model that can be done monthly, quarterly or yearly
For other stores like UAS we do this with paid major updates yearly which isn’t ideal

Ideally
We would even be happy to give the plugin for free source included and have just a “maintenance” subscription clients could sub to that is what we do directly

You can get all of our tools and a perpetual license to use them by subbing up for 1 month or more that is yours to keep forever

if you want updates or more than community support you sub up for a period that suits you 1 month at a time or whatever else

GitHub Sponsor, Patreon, etc. all make that easy to implement directly but it would be a game changer if FAB had that as a feature of the store along with proper customer support e.g. informing users of it, how they can start and cancel easily using FABs payment processing and so on

I know a lot of tools devs use the same model and UAS not having that is a HUGE issue and why many push to move clients to direct licensing

PS
if its not clear why Major Update isn’t ideal

If we do yearly major updates and you purchase on Nov 1 (our start of year) then great you go 12 months before you need to pay the discounted upgrade fee which is really a maintenance fee

But if you purchase our asset Sep 1 … well now you feel ripped off, and yes we can do a grace period in other stores but it doesn’t change the fact that unless you purchase on Nov 1 your not getting a full 12 months and that grace period really only makes it worse … if you purchase on Sep 1 and we do a 60 day grace then your getting 14 months and some people absolutely do that math and adjust behaviour accordingly

Enter subscription

You start your monthly, quarterly or yearly sub on Jun 12th … and exactly 1 month, 3 or 12 later you are billed again, you don’t lose any time because you purchased in the middle of a major cycle.

PS v2
No subscription is not evil or anti consumer
Unless Unity, Adobe, etc. are doing it  … because they take the license away when the sub ends and that is BS

Our subscription and the model I would want to see FAB let us do

WHen you sub for 1 period you get a license that is yours to keep, so you can cancel right then and there and keep using that version, with no future patches and no obligation of support at all for the rest of your life

Want an update, or need some formal support … okay sub up for a month and get a month of updates and support … want to save a few bucks and secure a year worth at a time fine offer quarterly and yearly options with a minor discount

this isn’t new, its how commercial software works … I know Epic is paying Microsoft and others “Maintenance” dues every couple years based on the number of users and all that or they are using direct subscriptions.

The same cost of on going development, maintenance and support applies to code tools as well. We need this or we cant create a viable business using FAB.

I agree. This “Pay once, own forever” needs to be buried. Why is Epic always pampering Game Devs? They add upgrades, subscriptions and controversial loot boxes to their Games but we can’t even get paid upgrades on FAB?

Shame on them :-1:

Be sure to tick the Vote button in the upper right corner of this thread … so they know this is important to us

I’ve smashed that vote button, let’s if anybody else is brave enough.

@skfabby is there any means we can track this
Its a bit of a show-stopper for us as far as bringing our Unity packages into FAB and for our Unreal packages this means we more or less have to move users onto our own subscription model and off the store.

It’s just not fit for purpose if there isn’t a means for a paid “maintenance” or “update” or something similar. Ideally, you would have paid updates, subscriptions and a few monetization options for us but bare bones we need at least 1 of them.

Buy once and get updates for life is not viable
And we do not want to force existing customers to pay full price each maintenance cycle so it has to be a facility built into the market
