Hello everyone!
I would like to propose and request consideration for the development of a new Fortnite Account Merge System.
The idea is to explore whether a modern account merging system could be developed to allow players to combine the Fortnite cosmetics and progress from two separate Epic Games accounts into one, while addressing the security and account ownership issues that affected the previous merging system.
Why is this needed?
Some players have ended up with two separate Epic Games accounts, each containing cosmetics, progress, or purchases they would like to have together.
This can happen for different reasons, such as losing access to an original account, creating a new one, or recovering an old account years later.
I personally experienced this situation. I started playing Fortnite in Chapter 1 Season 7 on Nintendo Switch, lost access to my original account, and eventually created another Epic Games account. I recovered the original account in 2024, but by then I had already accumulated cosmetics and progress on both accounts.
Having to constantly switch between two accounts is inconvenient, and some cosmetics end up unused simply because they are separated.
I understand why the previous account merging system was discontinued, especially considering account trading, stolen accounts, and ownership disputes. However, I believe these problems could be addressed through a redesigned system with stronger verification and security measures.
Proposed development and security measures
Here are some possible solutions that could be considered when developing such a system:
1. Two-factor authentication (2FA)
-
Require 2FA to be enabled on both accounts before starting the process.
-
Send verification codes or confirmation requests to the registered email addresses.
-
Require confirmation from both accounts before proceeding.
2. Account ownership verification
-
Request proof of ownership, such as purchase receipts, transaction IDs, or other relevant account information.
-
Use an automated verification process for standard cases.
-
Forward suspicious or inconclusive cases to Epic Games Support for manual review.
3. Security and risk assessment
The system could evaluate certain account activity signals to identify potentially compromised or transferred accounts, such as:
-
Recent email or password changes.
-
Recent display name changes.
-
Unusual login locations or IP activity.
-
Suspicious account recovery or ownership changes.
These signals would not automatically determine whether an account is legitimate, but could help identify cases requiring additional verification.
4. A pending period before merging
-
Introduce a 7–14 day waiting period after approval.
-
Notify both account owners through email and in-game notifications.
-
Allow the process to be cancelled if either account owner identifies suspicious activity.
-
Only complete the merge once the waiting period has ended.
5. Eligibility checks and inventory consolidation
-
Establish clear rules regarding which cosmetics, progress, and entitlements can be transferred.
-
Detect duplicate items and handle them according to predefined rules.
-
Prevent the system from being used to transfer or acquire items from accounts that do not belong to the requester.
6. Preserve Epic Games Store purchases
One important consideration is that merging Fortnite inventories should not force players to lose their other Epic Games Store purchases.
Ideally, the system should consolidate eligible Fortnite content while preserving the games and other purchases associated with the accounts. Players should not have to sacrifice their existing game libraries just to bring their Fortnite cosmetics together.
Interactive prototype / Demonstration
I have created an unofficial web prototype to demonstrate how some of these ideas could work in practice. I have the links but I can’t share them here, so I can send them to you if you want, both for the fusion system demo and the source.
The prototype includes simulated account verification, 2FA, ownership checks, security risk assessment, manual review, a pending period with cancellation, eligibility checks, and inventory consolidation.
It also includes examples of how the system could handle different scenarios.
Please note that this is only a community-made demonstration. It does not connect to Epic Games services, access real accounts, or modify any Fortnite inventory.
What I am requesting
I would like to ask whether a system like this could be technically explored and potentially developed by Epic Games.
Could a secure account merging process be implemented using verification procedures, automated security checks, and manual review when necessary?
I understand that this would require careful consideration of account security, technical limitations, and existing policies. I am not suggesting that the old 2019 system should simply return. Instead, I am proposing a redesigned approach that attempts to address the problems that led to its removal.
I would appreciate feedback from developers and community members regarding the technical feasibility of this idea, possible improvements to the proposed security measures, and any challenges that would need to be considered.
Thank you for taking the time to read this proposal and explore the demonstration!
