[Feature Request] Add PLY File Format Support as a Sellable Asset Category on Fab

Hi Fab Team,

I’m a creator who specializes in 3D Gaussian Splatting assets and
would like to sell PLY files on Fab, but I’ve noticed there is currently
no category or format support for .ply files.

[Why PLY / 3DGS is a growing market]

3D Gaussian Splatting (3DGS) has rapidly become one of the most
exciting technologies in real-time 3D rendering. PLY files are the
primary format for distributing 3DGS assets and are widely used in:

  • Unreal Engine 5 (via plugins like Luma AI, Polycam, and 3DGS plugins)
  • Unity (via AR Foundation and third-party renderers)
  • WebGL / Three.js experiences
  • VR/AR applications

Tools like Polycam, Luma AI, and RealityScan are making 3DGS content
creation more accessible, which means demand for high-quality PLY
assets is growing rapidly.

[Proposed Category Structure]

I’d suggest the following placement within Fab’s existing taxonomy:

3D Assets
└── Point Cloud / Volumetric
├── 3D Gaussian Splat (.ply)
└── Point Cloud (.ply / .pts / .e57)

Or alternatively, adding “.ply” as an accepted file format under
existing categories such as:

  • Environments
  • Props
  • Characters

[What I’d like to sell]

Specifically, I’m looking to sell:

  • High-quality 3DGS scene captures (outdoor environments, interiors)
  • Character/object Gaussian Splat assets optimized for real-time use
  • AR-ready PLY assets tested with Unity AR Foundation

[Business case for Fab]

  • 3DGS is gaining traction as a next-gen alternative to photogrammetry meshes
  • Unreal Engine already has community plugins supporting PLY / 3DGS
  • Adding this category would position Fab ahead of other marketplaces
(currently no major marketplace has a dedicated 3DGS section)
  • It opens a new creator segment: photographers, volumetric capture
    studios, and AI/NeRF creators

I understand format support may require technical review, so I’m happy
to provide sample files or answer any technical questions about the
PLY/3DGS format.

Thank you for considering this request. I look forward to hearing
your thoughts.

Best regards,
