FAB - Limited-Time Free assets licences: Personal or Professional?

Hello.
I need a clear official statement from Epic about the licenses options with monthly Limited-Time Free assets.
I could find a few other questions posted on that matter and none seems to give a definitive answer so far. I feel we are all abandoned into the dark there.

Things are not clear in a few scenarios. Just before January, since the promo has started after FAB has been launched, I did something I had no info about, I claimed the Personal licenced version first then the Professional licensed ones. Since January I couldn’t do it no more.
That of course helped me to figure out something there wasn’t a clear information about but the scenario looks way more complicated than that but still leaves me confused.
I had no revenue in the past 12 months, I actually had no revenue in years by now due to my professional and personal crisis and learning Unreal Engine has been my main occupation for the last 3 years {4 if we consider Conan Exiles’ UE4 based DevKit when modding the game}, which means I should just pick the Personal Licence when purchasing an asset.

Now… is the same for free products in general? Is that the very same about the monthly Limited-Time Free assets licence as well? What happens if I claim the Professional since it’s free?

I’ve found different voices in the Devs community stating you at Epic have communicated it’s suggested to us to claim the Professional licence anyway to take chance of the promo to be fully covered in terms of licence. Are that voice and statement correct? What’s your official position at Epic?

Speaking of the current selection of Limited-Time Free assets there is a particular case as well I have a question about…
The “Parry Attack System”, which is included in the “Combat Fury” system I purchased with a Personal Licence back in Christmas’ 70% Off Sale. I actually already had claimed the Easy Combo Buffering system when it was given as a Free For The Month several months ago and purchased the “Bullet Hell Pro” from the same seller, both covered with the old now UE default Licence.
Can I claim the Professional Licence for that particular asset so that, if used the Easy Combo Buffering and Parry Attack System together for a non-Combat Fury custom made by me system?

I really hope you can clarify this to me so I know, from now on, if I can claim the Professional licence with any future Limited-Time free assets or I should rather stick with the personal Licence I should pick due to my non-professional status.

It would be nice and useful for the entire community if you made a clear statement, as Epic, on the matter which I’m not the only one to feel confused and concerned about.

I believe a 3rd Licence should be introduced, an Indie Licence for new developers with limited budget projects and assign the Personal Licence to non-professional and non-commercial projects.

I really hope in a feedback on all this.

Thank you, in advance.
Cheers!

Hi there,

Thank you for raising this topic.

The Fab Personal Standard License tier and Fab Professional Standard License tier have the same scope of usage rights - there is no difference in how you can use the asset under Personal tier compared to Professional tier. The distinction for the two tiers is the buyer’s status at the time of purchase. In the case that the buyer’s status changes after the purchase (ex. revenue over 100K USD), they can still use the products purchased previously with the Personal license tier and do not need to upgrade to the Professional license tier. This applies equally to paid-for and free products.

In regard to the Fab Limited-Time Free Program, unless you meet the criteria for acquiring the Professional license tier only, there is no preference on which license you should choose. As mentioned before, both tiers grant you the same usage rights. The products will either way be available to you under the Fab Standard License. (See the full terms here)

As for products claimed that were part of the UE Marketplace Sponsored Free Content (also known as “Free For the Month”), they are still subject to the UE Marketplace license (Epic Content License). Currently, Fab does not allow for “updating” the license if you already have the product in your library, but there should be no need for you to do it.

We are working on ways to better inform users on this topic and thanks again for the feedback and questions.
