For me the lack of oversight on IP infringement is a deal-breaker. I stopped using Sketchfab a long time ago because of this.
Reviews etc. are a pain, but none of them are a legal risk like the clear IP theft on FAB is.
They are at the moment just allowing hundreds of clearly stolen product listings to proliferate. It’s a huge risk to customers. I cannot justify any more FAB purchases until something changes on this front.
It’s very easy. Half of the assets are things from Lord of the Rings, Elden Ring, The Witcher 3, Skryim, etc. Very well known IPs. These are not obscure at all. Had these been subject to literally any level of review whatsoever, they would have been rejected.
Is it Witcher stuff from The Witcher Series, showing The witcher Logo from one of the best selling RPGs of all time? Oh, it is? It’s ■■■■■■■ stolen IP.
This is precisely what I meant when I said that I no longer feel like I can make purchases on the marketplace. A lot of them are super clearcut… but who’s to say I don’t purchase something that looks legit, only to find out - after releasing a game or something - that its actually ripped from somewhere and Epic just didn’t do any sort of due diligence. Its a bunch of land mines waiting to happen.
Yes exactly…the risk of unknowing infringement makes FAB a legal liability because they are not doing their due diligence to at least try to make sure assets are legitimate.
Btw. from seller perspective… You should realize that Epic never took any responsibility for content on the Marketplace. It was always up to the individual people/companies selling stuff on UE Marketplace (we just promised in our agreement with Epic that we have all the rights to stuff that we put on sale there) and the buyer to make sure that he can use the content in his projects legally. Though, to be fair they did do decent job at content moderation for UEM (but not perfect, IIRC twice there were assets ripped from games in ‘free for the month’). Content moderation is extremely hard.
No I know this is the case. But when there are such clearly blatent unlawful products on the site, then there is little reason to expect that any sort of control is in place. Like previously if someone had tried to publish a disney model, for instance, it would have got blocked. If somehow it got through, it would have been reported and removed quickly (I remember examples of guns ripped from Call of Duty, I think it was, getting through that were removed within a few hours)… But now the FAB store, on its launch day when it should be getting the most attention and care from Epic, has all these very, very clear cut cases of IP infringement and it doesn’t seem like any of them are being dealt with even though they have been reported all over these forums, subreddit, twitter, and so on. So whereas before it was “well we have to trust the seller, but at least it seems like whenever something IS pointed out its dealt with quickly”, now its just the wild west and there’s no reassurance of any kind.
… and imagine how I feel being on the same store, with assets that took months of work to develop… side by side with stuff ripped from games (some what I seen say this even in the description ) or ai generated slop or singular, low effort models. A lot of it ranking higher then my assets . I didn’t expect smooth launch for such an ambitious project, but Epic ‘exceeded expectation’
Yep, I’m in the same boat. I’ve literally spent the last year working on a major update for my primary seller… getting close to launching it and now I’m just like… why did I even bother lol. Could have just gone and ripped some models from a few games and rolled the dice lol
I’m a seller, too, and I feel depressed as well.
I’m on the plugins side of the marketplace; you’d think Sketchfab and AI wouldn’t hurt my plugins, but this 15-year-old “search engine” they provide is completely broken(search for “power”, you’ll get “tower” in the results). My assets are buried under unrelated AI-generated assets, and if you stumble upon my plugins, they lost half of the reviews I gathered over the years.
I was also working on a new plugin, but it’s not worth it. Nobody will ever find it.
We can all enjoy the 100% no-royalty deal until the end of the year on half the sales we did before (sarcasm).
Indeed the “relevance” filter was enhanced, still not great. BUT the most important sorting (by rating) is completely broken.
Example:
My asset is called level design assistant. It has 48 reviews (wich is a lot).
Sort by relevance: 2nd place : link
Sort by rating: 192nd place: link
And YES, assets without ratings are displayed BEFORE assets with 48 reviews and an average of 4.8/5.
And that’s a shame because sorting by rating is a fundamental standard for anybody. We missed it for a long time in the previous marketplace, and it’s an excellent update.
But it’s broken, and when you dig deeper, well, the reviews do not display text and are never displayed if you have less than 5 reviews.
(if you have 4 1/5 reviews it’s gonna be hidden btw).
When was the last time Epic didn’t royally ■■■■ up a web service?
Old forums?
Wiki?
QnA?
They’re just either cursed or evil.
Now they ■■■■■■ up sketchfab and marketplace only to use a cursed domain name.
A few years into the future, it will not survive.
Also my stuff doesn’t look right on this new fab.
It was fine on sketchfab and it looks fine in UE4/5.
But fab for some reason just can’t render normals right.
Hi everybody. Thank you for your feedback - I’ve passed it on to the team. Some of the things you mention (wishlists, improved ratings) are already on our roadmap and others are things that aren’t yet or may not be. We will provide more insight into the roadmap as soon as we can.
Meanwhile, the team has been working hard to resolve some of the bugs that you all initially experienced and will continue to improve the user experience and add many of the features that you’re eager to have.
Thanks for the response Abby… I was wondering if you had any comment you could make about the vast amount of copyright infringing material? As we have discussed in this thread - right now its very difficult to feel safe as a customer making purchases of content when there are so many products that are blatantly in breach of copyright.
We understand that the loss of open-text reviews is a sore spot for some sellers. While there was definitely some useful information in the UEM reviews, the huge majority of them tended to be either not very useful (“Great work thanks” - in order to meet the minimum character requirement), or nonsense (in order to prove purchase, get access to support, etc. - this specific need has been solved by Fab’s new Verify Order tool). We also found reviews to be a vector for abuse/bullying, as well as some evidence of coordinated review bombing.
The next iteration of ratings and reviews on Fab aims to improve many of these problems. We are looking at multiple numerical metrics and a more qualitative review tagging system. We will also continue tweaking our search algorithm to make sure that older products with many, many reviews do not completely overwhelm newer products or products with fewer reviews in general.
We have seen, and received plenty of feedback that, the Questions system on UE Marketplace was abused even more than the Review system in terms of bullying and spam. Hosting and allowing this sort of communication has been pretty fraught in terms of bullying and griefing.
We’re planning to introduce a new FAQ system on listings that is controlled by the seller, allowing them to post information in question and answer format without forcing them to triage submitted questions outside of their preferred support channel(s).
This is a known issue. The plan was and is to use the “legacy” publish date from UE Marketplace or Sketchfab and not the migration date. This should already the case for sorting in search, but it’s not working in filters or the date displayed on the product page.
Wishlists are one of the highest priority features on our roadmap. We are also looking into restoring/migrating wishlists from Marketplace to Fab.
This is great feedback on the need to filter by engine version, thank you. I’ve recorded it.
We are actively working on this.
We explicitly blocked content under the Editorial license on Sketchfab from being migrated, and we are deciding if, when, and how to support this type of content and license in the future. It’s not a top priority for Fab just yet, but there are legitimate use cases for the distribution of editorial, fan art, non commercial that Fab and its licensing options are not equipped for at this time.
All Necessary Rights. You will not provide any Submission Materials or Content to Epic or a Marketplace Operator for which you do not have all necessary intellectual property, publicity, and other proprietary or third-party rights to grant all of the licenses described in this Agreement.
Again, we are actively working on resolving this issue.
This is a known issue and a fix is already on the way.
Thanks for the feedback.
Search Issues
We will continue improving and tweaking the search algorithm. This includes reducing the importance of “fuzzy” matching over exact matching, the importance of the title vs the description, and the additional of tags and other fields such as seller name.
This is a specific known bug. It works as expected if you add a rating filter to search, but it’s broken when using “All”. It will be fixed soon.
