Hi everyone,
I’m encountering a very strange issue with foliage rendering in Unreal Engine 5.5, and I’m hoping someone can help. I recently upgraded my GPU from a 1080 Ti to a 4070 and also moved from UE 5.4 to 5.5. Since then, my foliage has been rendering with extreme noise, making it unusable.
I initially thought the problem was with my existing ArchViz scene, but I’ve since tested it in a brand new, clean project with the same results. Here’s what I’ve done to reproduce the issue:
- New Project: Created a fresh UE 5.5 project.
- Basic Setup: Applied a basic grass material to the Unreal default floor mesh. I also added the default HDRI using one of Unreal’s template HDRI textures.
- Foliage: Used the Megascans “Grass Clumps” asset and added it to the foliage painter. Painted the foliage onto the ground.
The result is incredibly noisy foliage, as you can see in this video https://youtu.be/HAlCB0RjRoI. The noise is persistent and makes the foliage look very grainy and unpleasant.
Here’s what I’ve already tried, based on suggestions from friends:
- HDRI Resolution: I’ve tried different HDRI resolutions, but this doesn’t seem to affect the noise at all.
- DirectX/Lumen: I’ve confirmed that DirectX 12 and Lumen are enabled in the project settings (as you can see in the video).
- Ray Tracing: One friend suggested it might be a ray tracing issue, but wasn’t sure what specific settings to adjust.
This is particularly puzzling because I never had this problem with my 1080 Ti in UE 5.4. The only changes are the GPU and the engine version.
Has anyone else encountered this issue, or have any ideas what might be causing it? Any help would be greatly appreciated!
Thanks in advance!
