I think I starting to get you are after. But may I ask why you are trying to export the asset from UE4 to Maya? Were you trying to edit it or add more parts/meshes to it?
Was the asset bought of the market? Is it a skeletal mesh or static meshes? If the latter, you could export them separately and parent/group them inside Maya then export them again to UE4.
The only asset that I exported from UE4 to Maya (2016) in the past was the mannequin to use as a reference image for my level and I remember the skeleton was a bit messed up but I wasn’t planning to animate it.
