I would like to open a discussion about the sales performance of products in formats other than the UE5 engine in our marketplace. We know that on this platform, we can sell 3D models in various formats, such as (.blend, FBX, among others). However, it is evident that there is a priority for content packages focused on the Unreal Engine.
The purpose of this forum is for us to share our experiences selling products in more general formats, like the ones mentioned earlier. Have you had success selling in these formats? Is there any opportunity to be profitable in this niche?
For context, I am an old-time seller from the previous Epic marketplace, and I have content packages for sale focused on the UE4/5 engine. However, I have recently started publishing packages only in .blend and FBX formats, and so far, I have not received a single sale for these packages compared to the ones in UE format.
I remember your packs from the old marketplace and that you got a bunch of good reviews there, so the quality of your models can’t be the issue.
Outside of everyone having their sales dropped hard on FAB and customers not being keen on buying stuff on FAB anymore, I can only guess that selling the assets only as FBX can be a bit of a turn-off for potential Unreal gamedevs, especially those used to buy models in the UE format.
It’s just an extra step to import the models into Unreal and if you don’t do everything correctly or there are problems, you will have to redo the materials and potentially the collisions.
Having the assets available in the UE format makes it just more convenient, although I wonder if people actually look at the format when buying models.
Have you tried making a few models available in the UE format, to see if there is any difference in sales?
Haven’t posted single UE file, I’ve been getting around 10 sales per month. Basically, the only format I focus on is FBX with additional blend files as a source.
As I mostly sell single models, is it really worth to upload them in Unreal format?
It depends on what you sell. Regardless, you’ll get more sales if you include more formats—this is very obvious. Your type of assets are common among other sellers, especially when sold outside of the UE5 format. If you have assets that people want to buy in UE5 format but can’t because they don’t exist, they’ll need to turn off their filter and look around on Fab or other websites. I don’t sell UE formats, but I get 40 sales per month, which is nothing amazing. I’m sure I would have more if I bothered converting them to UE format (or Unity), which I plan to do in the future.
I only upload in OBJ and then convert each model to the 3 file formats Epic advise we convert to.
I’ve only sold about 5 models in the last month or so, but I don’t expect to sell many of the models I create at the moment, at least until I diversify what I offer.
I’m glad you started this thread.
I’ve been thinking about sales and other formats.
I’m wondering if I should also upload an FBX file of my models, but what I really want to do is offer the .Uassets file format. I’m assuming it might help sales.
I don’t know how to offer unreal formatting (someone said join a discord, never done that, so I’m hoping to find a vid instead).
Can I ask why you don’t now offer the unreal format?
It’s got me wondering if I should invest the time learning how to.
I understand that sharing my page for evaluation and comparison can help others improve, but I’d rather not essentially disclose my earnings. That’s why I’m commenting from this account. What I can share is that I sell in a niche market with some competition, though there’s virtually no competition in terms of quality. My assets are often purchased together, and I consistently release new items. My store currently offers over a hundred assets.
