Error: Out of video memory trying to allocate a rendering resource

I just tried to open my old Sun Temple project, and I get this error every time. It was created with UE4.7.6, on the same machine, with nothing changed.

I verified my drivers are still current. Then I made sure the launcher is forced to use the GPU, and not the Intel GPU. I also made sure to run the launcher in administrator mode.

What else can I do? Every solution google finds points to updating the GPU drivers.

I tried opening a copy of my project with UE4.9.2, and got the same error.

Finally, I tried opening all of my old 4.7 projects and even the smallest of them crash with this error.

My current drivers and settings used to work. I have changed nothing. What else to try? All the answers I have found so far talk about installing the drivers.

Hi Realmlord -

The crash that you are seeing, does it trigger an Epic Crash Reporter or a Windows Crash Event?

If it triggers the Epic Crash Reporter, can you post the Machine ID and make sure to please submit the crash or we will not be able to find it.

If it triggers a Windows Crash Event, can you please post a copy of your Windows Event Viewer Logs? You can find information about how to retrieve these logs at this wiki site: A new, community-hosted Unreal Engine Wiki - Announcements - Unreal Engine Forums

In either case, please confirm that your Sun Temple 4.7.6 project is a vanilla version or if not what have you changed about the project?

Thank You

Hi,
I don’t get an Epic Crash Reporter, and I also don’t get a Windows Crash Event. All that appears is a dialog box that says “Error: out of video memory trying to allocate a rendering resource.” When I click on the button, the dialog box goes away and UE4 Editor never appears. I can also load the UE4 Editor, and open my project, but the same thing happens.

I added several objects to the Sun Temple, and deleted some that were there. Not a lot of modifications.

I tried creating a new Sun Temple project, and got the same result. Then I went back to all my 4.7 projects and none of them (even the extremely small ones) would load. They all create this error.

I have also tried cold-booting the machine, but got the same results.

The problem is more serious than I thought. I tried creating any new project in 4.9.2, and I get the same error. Even creating a blank project causes this error. My computer and all my work is completely unacceptable right now.

I wiped the existing drivers, and reinstalled them. It was the latest version, so wiping and refreshing did nothing.

I went back and looked at forcing the launcher to open with the GPU and administrator mode. Even though I forced it into mode a few days ago, I found the setting was not sticking. Tonight I successfully forced it out of Intel mode and I was able to create a blank project.

I tested my SunTemple project, and it opened fine. Problem Solved!

If only laptops did not come with too many GPUs.
