Error during cooking. To the rescue. "Custom Property List Not Initialized"

I recently updated to UE 5.6 on Windows and i’m getting this while test cooking my project. I have no clue and can’t find help so far. Thanks in advance. Error doesn’t happen in 5.5

Considering that 5.6 has just been released, it is prone to have unexpected issues. Still, we can try a few steps for resolution here:

  1. Since the error is tied to BPC_DamageSystem, test by re-compiling it, and check the output log for warnings

  2. Perform a redirector fix from Content root

  3. Clear cache for any old elements present from 5.5, via deleting folders Saved, Intermediate, and DerivedDataCache, then attempt to cook again

1 and 2 makes no difference.
3 and i get “The LiveLinkHub.target file does not exist. Would you like to build the editor?” message on startup. Which i have to choose no, yes just doesn’t do anything.
How to fix this new issue?

Oh and the same error still occurs during cooking.

Sadly still not able to cook my project.

Found the solution. Just renaming BPC_DamageSystem to something else solved the issue.

Running into the same error. Renaming did not solve my issue :(. Any other ideas? I renamed from BPC_Damageable to BPC_DamageSystem and fixed redirectors. I also noticed all my variables on that BPC get set to 0 every time i restart the editor, no idea why, reseting the values makes it work in PIE until i restart editor again and need to do the same.

deleting the bp component and remaking it from scratch was rough but it did fix my issue

I am having the same issue. Any better solutions than recreating the component?

I also face this issue, in my case it’s in a PDA - I tried renaming and even re-creating it, but even the recreated asset fails in the same way. I’m wondering if the parent class might be the issue, but it’s hard to track down.

So I found a little workaround that at least let’s me get further in the build process, just want to share it in case it helps someone:

I created a child class of the affected blueprint’s parent, then reparented the affected blueprint to this dummy parent. In my scenario that should work and the error doesn’t happen during build.

I found a solution!!!

At first, simply renaming or reparenting didn’t fix the error. The real solution came when I focused on removing as many direct references as possible from the blueprint.
Here’s what was happening:

  • MyComponent had a reference that kicked off a cooking process for another blueprint.
  • That blueprint had its own references, which eventually triggered cooking for MyComponent again. A circular reference.
  • This created a long dependency chain.

If this chain gets too long or messy, the cooking process can’t always resolve it in the correct order, and it fails. Probably because one of the assets wasn’t ready or “cooked” in time.

To fix it:

  • I removed some direct references in MyComponent.
  • I replaced them with blueprint interfaces.
  • I used the Reference Viewer to confirm the links were fully gone.

The error message in the editor includes this line:

So… is this truly a race condition? Or is it just bad blueprint dependency management that looks like a race?
