Epic Games Launcher version 19.0.0 does not start on Core 2 Duo CPUs due to lack of SSE4.2 support.

Launcher version 19.0.0 requires SSE4.2, which is not supported by Core 2 Duo processors, currently listed as minimum compatible requirements:

https://www.epicgames.com/help/en-US/epic-games-store-c-202300000001639/launcher-support-c-202300000001735/system-requirements-for-the-epic-games-launcher-a202300000014568

Steps to reproduce:

Attempt to launch the Epic Games Launcher v.19.0.0 on a system with a Core 2 Duo CPU (or any other CPU without SSE4.2 support) running Windows 10 x64.

Expected vs. actual results:

Expected: The launcher opens; Actual: The launcher does not even open.

Relevant lines on EpicGamesLauncher.log file:

Message dialog closed, result: Ok, title: Message, text: This CPU does not support a required feature (SSE4.2).
LogWindows: FPlatformMisc::RequestExit(0, FWindowsPlatformMisc::PlatformPreInit.CPUNotSupported)
LogWindows: FPlatformMisc::RequestExitWithStatus(0, 0, FWindowsPlatformMisc::PlatformPreInit.CPUNotSupported)

Yea thats why i cant get it to open on my Dell precision 490. I hope the devs fix this

Same problem here with an Intel Xeon X5470 (similar to Core 2 Quad) with no SSE 4.2
I have been talking with support and I had no success. They recommend me to talk with my “technology provider” in order to “update” my computer… :face_without_mouth:

Support is useless in a case like this, they only can guide you to reinstall the launcher, restart the computer and tips like that.

We need an Epic dev to check this problem and release a new version or, at least, let us downgrade to v.18. If you find a v.18 installer it automatically installs v.19, we can’t go back to a working version.

I am trying to be reasonable here but the thought of a games launcher requiring more modern hardware than most of the games in its library is ridiculous. There are still plenty of functional perfectly good pre-SSE 4.2 CPUs in use today.

I have very old hardware ( Phenom II X6 1100T ) but still the only games I am unable to play are the ones that require SSE 4.2. In some cases, depending on your CPU and the application in question, you may even be able to bypass this limitation by forcing the application to use a modified graphics API. Then the game will load and run perfectly fine to the point where you question why this requirement was even set in place to begin with.

Other than this one instance, I have personally never encountered an issue where an application outside of video games prevents you from launching due to lack of SSE 4.2. I’m sure there are cases where it is justifiable, but I think I can safely say that the Epics Games Launcher is not one of those cases.

Yeah I have a AMD Phenom II X6 1075T, and its no longer launching. I’m not techy enough to know what SSE4.2 support is or how to tell if I have it, but I suspect I don’t as my cpu doesn’t meet requirements to update to windows 11.

It won’t launch at ALL and I feel lucky to have found this because none of the support helped offer what the problem MIGHT actually be.

If its not to do with CPU, Its listed on the trello that the 19.0.0 update is mostly about changing the OS requirement and no longer supporting any 32-bit versions of windows. Kind wondering what happened on the backend. I’m on 64-bit windows though so I have no idea what’s up?

https://trello.com/c/hqw3fDvF/608-epic-games-launcher-1900

This just sucks so much. I’ve never had an issue with a LAUNCHER not launching before due to old hardware. This feels insane and like some crazy back end oversight or SOMETHING.

If they want to do crazy optimization stuff with their launcher, that’s fine and all. That could be a windows 11 download version, but they should still have one that can be used by any system that can run 64-bit 10 if they claim to STILL support windows 10.

I recommend rolling back from version 19 and running the launcher not for Win32, but for Win64 from the location:

maybe opening tickets related at this issue, following the support page, can push the situation a little bit… or at least is what i did writing to the support Ai, that i wanna open a ticket in any case… other platforms are working fine even with previous versions of the SSE, so we will see what they wanna do…

SSE4.2 support was added on Nehalem-based Intel Core i7, and AMD on the other hand first added support starting with the Bulldozer microarchitecture.

You can check SSE4.2 support with a program like CPU-Z:

I also have run into this problem on my Core 2 Quad. It would be nice if there was support for old systems that can still run many games that do not require SSE4.2

So does this mean Epic will refund everyone’s games that DON’T require SSE4.2 to run? My Core 2 Quad never had a problem running the launcher until this last “update”. My games also still ran fine without SSE4.2.

No, this means Epic will release a patched version 19 to run on these CPUs or they will allow to downgrade to v.18. Windows 32-bit users will stay on v.18 for example.

A simple game launcher does not need SSE4.2 support by no means.

They better damned well release a working version or I will be raising the biggest stink ever raised on social media over this. I have an especially hate filled bone to pick with Epic for dumping Unreal Tournament for that garbage Fisher Price game of theirs. I am getting REALLY sickened by these software vendors thinking they are the “gods” of computer land, free to dispose of us who made them what they are today.

Epic Games Launcher does not start on my device with an “AMD Phenom™ II X4 955 Processor” after update to v19. It worked well for many years until now. I don’t get any log printouts at all, but this CPU doesn’t support SSE4.2 either.

In my opinion, a game launcher should not have more restrictive CPU requirements than its supported OSes - in my case Windows 10 (64-bit).

Same problem here,

mac pro 2008 with dual xenon e5462 and a nvidia gtx680

Was trying for days, even did a fresh install. Better to read the log files next time, sse4.4.2 required :frowning:

I searched online for the epic games launcher 18.0.0 and installed that. Now the epic games launcher works again. Only one problem, after the first start it will update. Have to find the update dns, so i can block it in pi-hole.

I also tried heroic games launcher as an alternative, it seems this works for now.

Lets hope my mac pro 2010 with dual xenon x5680 and a radeon vega 64 wont be affected in the near future (lack of avx)

I have a solution for this problem.. takes a few steps..

1- Uninstall the actual launcher you have, i recommend use revo uninstaller because it cleans every lost file you may have after the normal uninstall (after this you can use revo registry cleaner too there are 1 month free version pro for both in their website)

2- delete all carpet related to epic from %appdata% %localdata% and %programdata% (this step is very important but not the most important)

3- download the last version before 19.0.0 (you can find it in many websites, just choose a safe one)

4- THIS STEP IS CRUCIAL.. create an exception in the file “hosts” from system32/drivers and block the updater, all you need to do is add a line like this (chatgpt or perplexity can guide you in this step)
127.0.0.1 update.epicgames.com

5- reboot your pc and install the launcher you downloaded, you can install like normal and then 2 things may happen, in the verification process may or may not give an error thats ok, but when you open the launcher remember always cancel any new update, go to the settings in the launcher and uncheck any automatic update or download.. a warning that you need to update will continue showing up but all you need to do for now is hit cancel..

thats how i manage to keep the last version of the launcher and is working.. hope the people in charge of the new updates read this and find us a solution if not a lot of people will lost epic games and all the games that requires it for login..

The Epic support guy just replied at my ticket, simply saying that I need a newest CPU. Well, ok, thanks, I know that. So now I have to say “bye bye“ to a X6 1090T that’s working fine. Other online games platforms at least are allowing you to run the client, then is the specific game/software that’s alerting you about requirements…

Thanks man… and I definitely agree with you. As said I can understand that every game or software, have specific requirements, but the launcher of a platform shouldn’t be affected.
