Epic Games Launcher Can't Install anything

Hello:

For some reason all of a sudden, I can’t install any of my library content, it only wants to go to 5.1, which I don’t even have:

I’ve tried deleting configs, rebooting, reinstalling, everything I can think of, now I’m stuck.

Does anybody have any ideas? Thanks!

Greetings @devlyn811!

That is an unusual scenario, I would suggest a full uninstall/reinstall of all Epic software:

  • First, uninstall the engine, launcher, asset packs, etc
  • Next, open the registry directory HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Epic Games\Unreal Engine\Builds, and delete any build entries
  • Finally, delete the folders %userprofile%\AppData\Local\UnrealEngine and %userprofile%\AppData\Local\UnrealHeaderTool
  • After that, no elements related to UE should be left in your system
  • Now, reinstall UE launcher from scratch, and add any version of the engine you need

I am having the same problem since the start of the new FAB starts. And I had reinstall Windows 10 brand new over, but still unable to install any Unreal Engine or Asset Libraries after a brand new installation of the Epic Launcher. Only my over 5 years of asset Libraries have managed to retrieve & list correctly, after login into my existing Epic account.

The problem is when I click to install any Unreal Engine, there’s no installation directory dialog is appearing. When I try to close down the Epic Launcher on the Taskbar, it just show me the crashed message.

Have tried all your Uninstalled processes. Still no luck at all.

Urgently needs assistant from the Epic Technical Supports. Thank you.

The Epic Games Launcher is an absolute nightmare.

What an unmigitated disaster:

And I already have it installed to 5.2.1

Originally, I have your problem as well.

After trying a couple of times, trying to patch up with all the .Net & Microsoft Visual C++ runtimes over a couple of months (according to previous online helps in this forum), the problem still exist.

At last, I had given up and decided to reinstall the Unreal all over. Then things get worsen, I have come into the current situation, that after reinstalling a simplest “Epic Launcher v18.1.3.msi” (latest online download), wouldn’t able to install any selected Unreal Engine after then.

I had cleaned all the related Epic files & registries. Now even, had reinstall into a brand new Windows 10, without any Antivirus/Firewalls, the same problem just would not install/download any game engines or asset Libraries.

And I could almost certain that the problem lies inside the ‘installing scripts’ either on the client or Epic server side as well. And these problems have started since the start of “launching of the new FAB” this year.

This ‘simple problem’ had already seriously postponed many of my game projects for 3-4 months now.

Frankly, I thank God Almighty every day that I don’t HAVE to work with UE professionally. I’m 3.5 years into my current project now, that I would have already been done 3 years ago except for UE. It has been an absurd and ludicrous nightmare since after 4.27.

I worked for a company using Unity, and all the while wished it was in UE. I shake my head - that was when the marketplace was in it’s infancy, when I actually got answers to questions.

There is no way I’m even going to ever think about upgrading to 5.5 - I’m living the nightmare fallacy of the bus stop - is it worth to keep waiting for a late bus, because I could have walked there by now… I am on the precipice of my release of this project, and … postponed… a funny word when you say it out loud, but like it’s been said:

“Hell is only a word. The reality is far worse”

that sums up my experience with UE – the Epic Games Launcher is just lemon juice on my eviscerated torso.

Yes. I do agree with most of your thoughts. I had never get involed with Unity, just couldnt have the time, can’t really say much.

However, for some reasons, you have better chance of doing it quickier & easier in the new UE5.5. As there’re new fantastic ways of doing model animations-rigging & manipulations during runtime, an improved VR mixed reality delvelopment and a new 3D model editing tools (as a form of new free plugins addon) are evolving since UE5.3 onwards. They could save you times & efforts from the old ways of doing these works. Of couse, unfortunaly there’s a timely stiff learning curved involed.

Anyway, my only question :

"Is there a better way of direct communication with the Epic Technical support/Help line for developers? "

As I just couldnt find any better venues of communicating with Epic Technical Support. Most of them online help links are almost non existing/working. This is a really worrying situation & nightmare for all Unreal Game Developers, as we are getting into more & more into serious & large projects involment/investment.

I have a game released on Steam since May 2022. It is not very popular. Shortly after releasing it, I was solicited by Epic about tech support services via email. I replied that I didn’t have a large budget as a solo developer, and that I could only afford at best a couple hundred bucks a month, I was immediately ghosted. Not even a reply to that email.

Maybe it was a scammer? But seems for sure to have been legitimately from Epic…

Oh~ my goodness! However, very well done mate for the game released. How did you go? Might be interested of knowing more about your interest later.

Well, I got a very good NEWs for everyone, including you & me.
I had already figured out the stuffed up issues from Epic Installation problem - in order to solve all the installtion problem:

" Just run the Epic Launcher online (with Firewall & AntiVirus on) and handon there for at least a few hours. All the unable to download engine/asset libraries/plugin problems as before, will begin to work like a charm. "

This is more likely show that the Epic Servers either have some installation scripting bugs or perhaps the worst, they may be compromised/corrupted by viruses/trojans for quite sometimes without notice- this would be really ‘a bad situation’ for all of us. I seriously suggest the Epic Technical Supports should inspect the issues as soon as possible.

Anyway, our problems are considered “solved”. Indeed, I believed this could also help thousand of people who have suffered from the same issue for months. At last, we can sleep better now.
Good luck mate.

Epic really got a big issues here…
