Hello, If I open the live sandbox for testing, is it safe to do so, could it allow others to download and possess it?

If you release your product to the live environment, it can allow others to download and possess it. If you want to create a testing environment, we highly recommend creating player groups and requesting access keys for specific sandboxes (we usually advise the Stage sandbox).
