Environment Work Pipeline

I am struggling with building a two level plateau with highest point at 180m and 200m wide. My initial plan was to make custom meshes in 3ds max for the vertical part and two landscapes for the flat parts. I tried to use the Visibility tool for the landscapes in order to cut the shape according to the shape of the plateau but it just looks ugly. What would be the more appropriate approach for the case? I thought I could use MegaAssemblies and eleminate the landscape but it seems that it would take too much resources.
