Entering the industry of game dev

I’m currently a self-taught frontend developer who has encountered challenges in securing a job due to the saturated industry and limited opportunities in my local area. The web development market here is relatively small, and competing with the local population in abroad countries makes it even more challenging, as employers naturally prioritize local candidates.

Recently, I’ve started learning UE 5 and find the process and the idea of becoming a game developer intriguing. However, I have reservations based on my past job search experiences. If I pursue a career in game development, there seems to be no opportunity for employment in my local area, as the game development industry is virtually non-existent here.

My question is this: considering my background and the challenges I’ve faced, do I have a reasonable chance of securing a game development job abroad, especially if I create a strong portfolio (keeping in mind that I don’t have a degree), in countries like the USA or EU? I am optimistic that the game development industry may not be as saturated as web development, and foreign employers might be more open to hiring international candidates like myself.

Hey @Cireki11! Welcome to the forums!

The short answer is yes! With some caveats.

A degree can give you a base level of acceptance- however, with a strong resume and portfolio, and a strong drive and the ability to keep going after many, many refusals, you can get around it. Everything depends on your ability to work as a team, learn fast, and deliver a good end result. Yes, a degree can help show that, but if you can prove these things without a degree, the ability to work remote has exploded in the industry across the USA and EU among many large companies!

I really appreciate your advice!
