Electropelago - A VR Short Story

Hi fellow artists, developers, and art explorers!
My name is Tyler and I (like many others before me) have an idea for a game.
Electropelago is VR-focused, unfolds in the space between 4 custom, non-procedural planets as well as the small islands that populate these planets.

I’m posting here so I can keep an accountable record of my journey and will update with screenshots and general updates as I progress.
This first update is my first pass of the 1st planet’s main island.
The planet is named Horizon, and the island is named RockyPoint (or Lighthouse Island when I finish my lighthouse)

Greetings @progranimator !

Electropelago. What an interesting title! It sounds like a group of islands with the sole purpose of harnessing or distributing electricity. Thank you for bringing your project here for us to witness its progress. We look forward to the continual unfolding of your VR adventure!

What are your top three favorite VR titles?

Thank you for the warm welcome, @Get_DOVAH_it

The more people I talk to about the title the more I realize it can be mis-leading.
I originally had the idea of an electrically-powered archipelago filled with ancient technology, so you would have been spot-on, but it has blossomed from a random story into something more personal and stellar(in a literal sense).

Electropelago no longer is related to electricity and instead is an abstract way of describing the electrified space between planetary locations. You, as the player, are tasked with traveling to different places over time to make deliveries while supporting a family on your home planet.

To answer your question about my favorite VR games…I would list them as Lone Echo(ambience/visuals), No Man’s Sky, Subnautica.
With a special shout-out to the unique experience of Dolphin Emulator’s VR mods.

  • created first pass of foliage placement using 3 types of foliage
  • added island waves blown in by wind
  • clouds move across the ocean in direction of wind
  • foliage flowers only appear on the highest parts of the island
  • bleached foliage appears near ocean water, outer edges of rocks, and outer edges of healthy foliage clumps
  • darkened the sand to visualize more detail of footsteps using a combination of ambient occlusion maps and 2 layered textures

  • second foliage pass, upgraded foliage density
  • added 2 discovery points to island(boat and telescope)
  • telescope is used for constellation naming, and boat is used for initiating the main story beat.

-Internal building first pass
-Added skeleton + chair
-Skeleton is the 100+ year remnants of the previous owner of the island. The current owner is the dead individual’s grand-daughter.
The skeleton holds in her right hand a story-progressing item.

Ah! I really dig your new concept of the electrified space between planetary locations! Do the different planetary locations make up the “electropelago”, where the “electricity” happens in the spaces between the locations? (Do I have the proper understanding? :face_with_peeking_eye:)

Thank you for sharing your top VR games. I’ve heard a lot about No Man’s Sky. I’m going to check out your other favorites. Although I invest my spare time in my current games, I also live vicariously through others’ gameplay.

I really like the adventure that Electropelago is becoming! What mysteries await!

Keep up the good work! :+1:

Thank you. I’m glad you like the concept because I’m only just beginning to unveil what’s in store for Electropelago!

Your understanding of the title is spot on and describes exactly what I am aiming for.
There is a short explanation for why the space between is ‘electrified’ but I won’t reveal that until I finsh the final touches of the lighthouse. :hourglass:

Stay tuned for the mysteries to unfold.
