Editor Freeze Issue (Reintroduced)

Issue

The editor freezes on launch/post-launch

More Info

I’ve posted a similar issue about the editor almost two weeks ago and a UE4 developer assisted me with the issue; however, the issue still persists. The editor keeps freezing on me. Sometimes on launch and sometimes it happens a shot while after opening up the editor. The computer is not completely frozen because everything else works fine but the editor. Previously, I thought it was due to the monitor setup, but it still persisted even after switching back to a regular one monitor setup.

Wrap Up

I haven’t been able to work on my game for almost two weeks. I’ve tried almost everything to to get the editor up and running again but nothing has worked. I even had to cancel a playtest I had scheduled because of this issue. Any help would be graciously accepted.

Hello,

Could you please provide your dxdiag?

  • Are you having this issue in a clean project as well?
  • Are you using the latest graphics card drivers? If not, please update your drivers.

Are you having this issue in a clean project as well?

Yes

Are you using the latest graphics card drivers? If not, please update your drivers.

Yes

According to the dxdiag, you are using 365.10. The latest for your card and OS is 368.22. Here is a link http://www.nvidia.com/download/driverResults.aspx/102997/en-us

After you perform the update, let me know if it is still freezing and we can offer additional suggestions.

Yes I just noticed the update icon in the show hidden icons button. However, I can’t install the drivers because of my internet at the moment. I also see that the driver update was released 5/23/2016. This issue that I’m having has been happening since before the driver update. Somewhere around three to four weeks ago.

Typically, driver updates have been known to resolve issues with editor freezes or failures to load.

You can also have a look at our Software Conflicts wiki page and see if you have anything on there installed that could be causing the freeze you’re experiencing.

Ok. Well I’ll try that and see if that changes anything. Also I have another question up that nobody is trying to answer so I’m going to ask it here.

Does UE4 have some type of backup support? Maybe through the launcher or will I have to manually put on say a USB drive?

You can look into using Source Control for version control of your projects. That would be the best course of action to ensure that you are saving backups of your project.

Let me know the results of the driver updates, and ensure that you do not have any of the softwares installed that are listed on the conflicts wiki.

Ok. Much appreciated. Well again, my internet is wonky right now so it might take a while. I’m having some people come work on it in a few days. Should I leave this question up or reintroduce it again in another post?

I am marking this topic as resolved for the meantime until you are able to test the suggestions that I have provided. When you get the chance, please respond to this thread to reopen it with the results and we can continue to investigate this issue.

Have a great day

Alright so I’ve managed to get my drivers updated and the issue still persists.

I see that you also have a ATI Radeon 3000 Graphics card in the PC. Are you ensuring that you are using your 950 by default instead of the Radeon 3000?

When using UE4 I’m not entirely sure. I’m still new to the whole dual monitor setup. I have one monitor hooked up to the integrated graphics and one using the 950. Radeon 3000 is unsupported by UE4 (and any other game for that matter) but of course my 950 is supported. I can still play high end games on the monitor that is supported. My games and UE4 load up on the monitor that is supported; however I am nervous about moving the UE4 editor and any other game to the unsupported monitor in fear that it might crash. Like I said, I’m still fresh to the whole dual monitor setup idea.

If you unplug the second monitor and only use the one, are you still experiencing the freeze issue?

I’ve tried that a few times already. The issue still persisted.

Looking at your PC, it seems that you are using 8gb of RAM, which is below the recommended. This could explain why you are experiencing the editor freezing. Could you monitor your memory usage while you are using the editor and let me know what numbers you are seeing in your Task Manager Processes?

Below the recommended? Before I got UE4, I researched the system requirements and I literally built my PC around the specs. I’ve used it for about two months and I’ve never experienced this issue. If that is below the recommended then someone should update the system requirements because that is very misleading. Lol.

You’re correct, that’s my mistake, I misread the information.

However, projects can often use quite a bit of RAM, which is why I was suggesting that you look into the amount of memory that your project was using.

Also, I linked you the Software Conflicts wiki a few days back, did you ever get a chance to look over it and see if you had anything on that list that could be causing issues?
