Edges of Screen Flash

The edges surrounding my screen flash and flicker while having the “Nvidia GPU Only” display mode option selected on Nvidia Control Panel. It doesn’t happen while having the other display mode, “Optimus” selected. The issue only occurs on Unreal Engine, I’m not saying the edges of my screen flicker while the engine is running, it only happens on the engine’s window! The reason I use that display mode for Unreal Engine was that the engine would regularly freeze or crash before I’ve finally decided to manually switch to “Nvidia GPU Only” display mode to use the engine. I know the engine crashing could be related to low VRAM but even though I have 8GB VRAM, I also have 64GB RAM so it should’ve been fine. Regardless, it never crashes while I’m using the engine on that display mode. But that causes this issue… It might not seem very significant from my video where I recorded one of the edges of my screen, due to the camera not capturing the reality as I see it, but trust me it’s unbearable to work while the surroundings of my screen are on full disco mode! I have an RTX 4070 Mobile btw, I reinstalled all Nvidia drivers including the studio drivers, everything’s up to date as well as Windows, and the Microsoft, Nvidia and ASUS supports couldn’t solve my issue. I also couldn’t find any reference online for such an issue, does anyone have an idea? I would really appreciate some help. Thanks in advance fellas!

I found this link from an old Reddit post: After updating to NVIDIA Game Ready Driver 461.09 or newer, some desktop apps may flicker or stutter when resizing the window on some PC configurations | NVIDIA that describes exactly my issue. It makes sense because I also noticed it happening after testing the game and closing the window. (It says game ready driver not studio but still) Though I contacted Nvidia support about that and they told me that they don’t recommend adjusting the registry anymore. So this seems like a known issue for a long time but I find it interesting how there’s not much reports on it online. I think only Nvidia could fix that and there’s nothing else to do then…

It’s probably a hardware fault of the led light strip in the laptop monitor. Most modern LED screens usually are edge lit instead of backlit like the older models. The light is diffused along the sides of screen via LED strips.

Does the screen flicker more intensely as you lower the brightness of the screen?
Is it less visible at full brightness?

If it is on the software side due to refresh rate, you could try limiting the max frames per second in the nvidia control panel. (try 60 and move your way up until you notice the flickering)

But if it was a manifacturing issue, wouldn’t I encounter the issue on other apps other than Unreal Engine?

About the intensity of the flashes, it’s not related to monitor brightness, but it flashes brighter as GPU temperature increases.

An ASUS support agent also recommended changing the refresh rate but no, it didn’t work unfortunately.

You could also try turning off VRR

When I searched up my issue online, I found results exactly like that. But I think what’s happening in my case is a bit different. It doesn’t happen in games, it only happens on Unreal Engine after I test the game and close the testing window, and it goes away once the fans go silent after a while. I was actually suspecting that, but that old Nvidia article got me convinced that something goes wrong after adjusting the windows like opening a test editor window and closing it. (It doesn’t happen on any other window though, not on the browser window, not even on the test editor window!) I will try that once I get to open my PC again though, and update on it. Thanks already for your help!

You could also try switching the RHI to different modes (DX12, DX11 and Vulkan) and see if it persists across all of them.

So sorry for the delay, I was just able to get on my PC. Unfortunately those tips couldn’t fix my issue. I really believe Nvidia’s causing this thing but at the same time I can’t stop thinking about why I couldn’t find more people with the same problem.

Have you checked if your specific laptop model has an all round update (bios, motherboard etc) that may stabilize the computer? Maybe it’s something to do with power regulation / distribution on a bios level.

There’s a new BIOS update that I haven’t installed yet but this issue was always there, even when I had my BIOS updated. So probably that’s not what’s causing the issue but I will of course update it as soon as I can. I’m also in contact with ASUS via mail currently though it’s kinda slow… I did get live chat previously but then they directed me to mail. I really hope it’s not a manifacturing issue, I would honestly choose to deal with it rather than dealing with ASUS.

Even one of the ASUS representatives I talked to said that it’s probably an hardware issue as well as Nvidia representatives but I don’t think so. Isn’t it weird this thing literally doesn’t happen in any other app including demanding games and other studio programs? (well I did catch the issue happening while gaming but only 2 times in a timespan of months)

After many contacts with ASUS, Windows and Nvidia, one ASUS support agent was finally able to determine the issue. So I learned that there’s no manifacturing issue, driver issue or anything. Since the editor uses VRAM along with RAM while testing the game, there would be a fluctuation between them upon closing the test editor, causing the edges surrounding the screen flash and flicker. IDK maybe there’s also another reason behind it since I couldn’t find other reports of my issue but that’s what I learned. At least I can now stop searching for answers!
