E57 PTS formats

Hi,

I’ve been using Reality Capture on Steam for a couple of months and it’s really an asset to my workflow. Recently I have been using Lidar scans for a project and was wondering if there would be any way to import a PTS file into RC? Currently this is not an option so my alternative method has been to convert the PTS project to a E57 in Autodesk ReCap, making sure when imported it doesn’t decimate. After converting the document to E57 I have successfully been able to import the whole scene into RC, However instead of the original scene from Cyclone being around 300mil points it has somehow decimated and decreased to 160mil. Instead of going back into Cyclone to register the raw scene again and exporting it as a E57 (which may take a couple of days) would there be any alternative method? Such as a codec for RC I could use to import the original PTS document?

(I’ve already tired importing the PTS file on both a regular RC licence and the Steam version)

Any advice would be much appreciated!

Thanks,

Henry

Hi henry_mountain

It is NOT possible as the PTS format is UNORDERED point cloud (dumb point cloud ) and PTX or E57 are ORDERED point clouds ( point clouds with scanner positions and transformation stuff. So in principle, you can create PTS from PTX or E57 but not the opposite way. The data is just NOT there.
So the only way is to use Cyclone and export it in a proper format that RC can process ( PTX or E57 )

Your “conversion” is not good for many reasons and can and will cause issues if you use the workflow like with PTS files, you have NO information on occlusion etc.

Thanks for the quick response, I thought that might be the case, we’re now going through the process in Cyclone to export the proper format (PTX or E57)

Thanks again for your help
