e57 from Recap not importing correctly

I’m working with laser scans from the Leica BLK360. It’s beneficial to do several steps in Autodesk Recap before bringing them into Reality Capture, for example, register the scans, orient the world, and do basic point cloud cleanup. Recap allows for exporting the edited point cloud or the unedited point cloud. Ideally, I use the edited one, but Reality Capture is having trouble importing it.

On my current test, it imports 2 of the 5 scans contained in the e57 file. As a test, I exported each scan as its own e57 and three of them failed to import into RC, throwing the error: “Operation Failed.”

However, this e57 imports correctly into several other point cloud apps, only RC seems to have a problem.

And finally, RC is able to import the unedited point cloud out of Recap without issue. However, I don’t get the benefit of my edits.

Hi Bill,

could this be related to your issue?

If not, did you check the folder of your scans for the 6 conversion files RC creates for importing the e57? If they are there you will probably be able to drag them into RC and it should work then. It’s an old bug that hasn’t been fixed yet…

This may be related. It’s hard to tell.

My one e57 file actually contains 5 scans. So, it should create 30 .lsp files upon import, but it only creates 12. I noticed in the Console, there are three warnings that say “Sampling estimation failed. Probably, the imported data are not a scan.” I’m happy to send the file in question if that would help.

Hi Bill,

in that case I would either file a bug report (respone is a bit better there) or get in touch with the devs directly via contact form. They are usually quite good about clearing things like this up…
