.e57 Colorization

I have a number of .e57 input files from Trimble X7 (I can get other formats TDX, TZF, PTX, RCP, LAS and POD for this data, but I now have e57 as an example).

When I import it into a project, RealityCapture imports pointcloud color information from .e57 in a form of a colored sparce point cloud.

What I am trying to achieve is to import multiple .e57 files into RealityCapture, optimize the resulting pointcloud and export it back as XYZ colored pointcloud.

There are no photos for this set of data and I am looking for a workflow to colorize resulting model from .e57 original color input, as there is no other color information for this set other than color of points within .e57 files.

At the moment, RealityCapture imports those .e57 files fine, sees the color, aligned them fine, but looses color when I process the model as it can’t find any information to colorize the resulting vertices from.

Is there a way to colorize XYZ pointcloud on export from just .e57 color information without photos? What about TDX, TZF, PTX, RCP, LAS and POD, if I get those for the same data?

Any input is welcome.

Hi Anton, did you use the Colorize or Texture option after model creation?

I tried both. But since, I assume, there are no images in this dataset (just .e57 colored pointclouds), the resulting model comes out as green only. No other colors.

In my regular photogrammetry sets where I have regular drone photos/videos with GRPs marked, I can do both, Colorize and Texturize to achieve the same result of colored XYZ point cloud on export. Colorize works faster, naturally, so I only texturize my models if I intend to export a mesh. For exporting XYZ color point clouds, Colorize is sufficient.

But in the case with only .e57 colored point clouds in the initial dataset (no photos) I can’t retain the point cloud colors. All points turn green.

hence, the original question.

Hi Anton, you should be able to colorize the model just from E57 (it is not so good as from images but it is possible).

What are your texture settings? What were the laser scan import settings?

Please try to clear the cache manually as described here, and launch the application whilst holding down shift, and you should see the following options:
