These are the specs of my laptop, I bought it recently saving a lot for it:
Brand: Lenovo
Model: IP3 15ITL6
Screen: 15.6" Full HD IPS
Processor: Intel® Core™ i7-1165G7 2.8 -4.7GHz
RAM Memory: 16GB DDR4 3200 MHz
Storage: 512GB SSD
Nvidia GeForce MX450 2GB
-Cores: 4
-Logic processors: 8
…I have enough to create things in Unreal Engine 5? Because I think the different is to be able to download it and another to use it, because when I open it I get the message “Video Memory has been exhausted. Expect extremely poor perfomance” and I would not know what to do…how do I improve in any case the performance of my development and flow? Or I can’t really develop on my laptop? Thanks, anything is appreciated :). Have a nice day.
the engine is telling you that it is a VRam issue the 2GB on the MX450.
where it is an MX card, and not an MXM card your ability to replace it is near impossible without many electrical engineering steps and maybe re-writing the BIOS.
first and foremost your performance in the Editor is not the performance when the game is fully packaged in “Shipping” there are so many other things running with the Editor that drags performance down, many of which are to help and safeguard while developing
that being said not all is lost you do have “some options”
you can focus your game to a smaller number of Mesh actors, or simplify the meshes/textures of the meshes you are going to be working with. you can utilize Level of detail settings, and worst comes to worst you don’t have to do too much special for Build Tests.
does your system have a Thunderbolt (or thunderbolt compatible) port then you might be able to get an eGPU where you take a Desktop Graphics card and wire it into your system to effectively “replace” (rarely do they end up working together) the GPU that is probably soldered to the motherboard.
the potential Bad news is getting the eGPU adapter is the “inexpensive” part, you will still need to get a hold of a Desktop GPU.
the worst case scenario if you “Must use” Unreal is to get another development system
if these are not “reasonable” to you then Unreal is often ridiculed in the Indie space for how “Heavy” it is. Epic has done wonders on the Load times, from 4.27 to 5 but… the amount of hardware resources it uses particularly in the Editor is sometimes hilarious. there are several “Lighter weight” options for game engines on the market; one of the jokes was “Unreal is for people that have super computers, Unity is for everyone else” (this is an exaggeration that is worth a chuckle at the least)
In the configuration area: Could you solve this by reducing the Engine Scalability Settings? I have already done this and the message has disappeared and everything is running better, researching that this does not affect the final product as it is only the preview and therefore I could work on this and from time to time switch between high quality or not -I had already got used to this when working in Premiere on my old laptop-…Can it work? Don’t trust Unity too much because of the controversy that arose recently, thanks.
if lowering the scalability settings makes the engine/editor more usable then you should be fine to work on your project as long as you are willing to deal with the trade offs (software dev is full of trade offs in many different ways…)
Unity could technically be “fine” to work with for at least the next few years (the CEO was not the architect of the move that was proposed, but they will lay low for a while) heck the last “major change” to the Unity agreement when they switch from per-seat perpetual license to subscription in the first place of 2013, so it was like 10 years, the numbers have changed over the years, but the last major change was 2013-2014
