Hi, i lost so many times data due to just Unreal, which is resulting in !months" of rework by now. If u here to mb learn it. Run from here.
Unreal team is so good im making promotion. If u even compare the engine to others with time u see unreal just looks like some arcade bs and its true. Lumen looks like anything else and nanite is unfinished junk that cost u even more crashes ^^. I swear to god: 90% of ppl here stay on UE due to working on their project but its no way to like this.
Any program is subject to errors that can break files. The larger the program, the more likely it is that something will break.
In addition, your hard drive may also fail, so backups should be made on different physical drives.
At one time (when I was young and stupid) I lost data that was important to me…
Since then I̶ ̶h̶a̶v̶e̶ ̶p̶a̶r̶a̶n̶o̶i̶a̶ I regularly make backups and my nerves are fine(I hope).
I somehow agree, howevers and butts are plenty on this subject.
Yes i agree that sometimes unreal feels like investors bait and not much more. Tim gets to stage hypes some new “investor baits keywords” (like paper2d, making unreal games for mobile, open world, nanite etc.) And most of those are either never finished (to actually usable state) or are nowhere near usable in current gen games on current average hardware. And when hardware catches up Tim has new “much more awesome new buzzwords” to sell.
Butts and howevers now:
Epic developers do awesome job. Yes unreal is totally bloated, its like swiss army knife that has every possible tool in, from chainsaws to forklift, to space rockets. However, they started doing plugins, modular code etc. Unreal 6 supposed to finally have verse (which i hope limits problems with object oriented crap, and loading order).
Also:
Most of people that start with unreal are drawn in with same buzzwords that Tim sells to investors. I was in countelss inde dev projects that instead of strating with game systems, go full speed with open worls (mostly empty maps), crazy landscape materials copied from some tutorial, weather systems, random plugins from marketplace, ofc MMO open world with only listen servers (aka distributed mmo), then nanite lumen. And then they realize that open world is not really game ready , nanite requires next gen PC (not average toaster PC), running that whole thing on steam deck is impossible. MMO requires actual backend and server infrastructure.
And:
Nobody ever listens to: start tiny project, create gameplay first, do not touch multiplayer until you know what you do in singleplayer project, do not touch landscapes, open levels and all that until game is ready for it.
So:
Start small, make silly game, then decide if unreal is for you.
Lol. i Can only see one single line im writing on on the Editor ^^. Unreal unfortunately is garbage. Im only using Landscape tool and placing assets. Still every hour crash. Im so afraid by now. Im fighting against myself not asving every 3 moves. Fix this pile of s.
Everytime im posting here u can be sure the program just crashed.
Ok guys im highely motivated cause my game looks nuts by now so i ended up with 2 crash within 30 min and got nothing done. i get 5.5.4 now. for sure things will be better after this.
I have to admit I do also have a lot of crashing going on. Sometimes it works fine all along, sometimes it will repeatadly crash while doing basic editor stuff. Creating variables, importing textures and so on.
I even made a post for it and if someone has any idea what could help I would be very glad.
If never tried other engines, but I think unreal is quite easy to get in and do something. There are some pretty good games that use unreal as well, so it seems to not to bad?
Maybe the documentation could be better. But otherwise you get everything you need to start a project, from models to plugins which really is work which is already done for you.
I to faced this problem a year ago, but I think it might be a graphics driver problem.
Could you plz post a screenshot of the very first crash message that appears on screen?
