Do Animation Sequences need Root Motion applied when applying to a Metahuman

Hi, When animating a metahuman in sequencer, when you apply a Animation Sequence to it, does that Animation Sequence have to have Root Motion built into it, I have watched loads of Root Motion Videos on YouTube, but everyone seems to be different, any help will be most appreciated. Thank You

Hello @Varicrew

I think it depends on what you want to achieve with your MetaHuman. Are you using Sequencer for a cinematic/cutscene or are you trying to drive gameplay (locomotion)?

If you’re making a cinematic directly in Sequencer, you probably don’t need to have ‘Root Motion’ enabled for your Animation Sequence.
It can be handled by either the Sequencer’s transform tracks, or by “just playing” the animation in place, while driving the movement of your MetaHuman’s Control Rig or Actor track.

However, if you are animating interactive gameplay movement or retargeting animations, Root Motion vs. In-Place will have a huge impact on how you want your capsule to move.

Can you tell me a bit more about your approach for animating your MetaHuman in Sequencer?
Are you keyframing the actor’s transform or retargeting standard animations (like Mixamo or Manny/Quinn)?

Also, if you want to check out how MetaHuman Control Rig and Sequencer interact, Epic has a great guide on the Animate Using Sequencer - MetaHumanSequencer - Animating MetaHumans with Control Rig

Let me know what your setup looks like and I’ll gladly help you figure out the best approach!
