Distance to nearest surface not working

I have a MacBookPro 2020 with intel i5 and iris graphics and an external gpu Radeon Pro RX580.
I cannot get the DistanceToNearestSurface to work.
I believe I have the minimal requirements:
Scalability Epic
Generate Distance Fields is on on my project settings
My mesh has “affect distance field lighting” disabled.
I generate a mask as in RiteOfilk.com - This domain is for sale!

But I get nothing in the output. No blend at all.

I suspect that the distance field is not working, but I do not know how to verify if this is the case.
Any help?

Plug it right into the emmisive and in the view unlit mode see if there is any color variation with and without affect distance field lighting enable/disable. Without more details everything seems to be in order.
