What is the roadmap or the steps to follow to create tracks in muddy terrain and visualize an animal’s footprints sinking into and displacing the mud as it walks?
Thanks in advance for your help.

Usually, one would use anim notifies in the walk/run animations to trigger it. First, open an animation, scrub thru the timeline to find the frame where foot hits the ground. Then in the track section of anim editor, right click and hit add notify (here you can use skeleton notfify and put code in the anim bp, or you can create a standalone anim notify blueprint that runs every time the anim hits that frame).
Then in whichever blueprint you chose to use, do a line trace straight down from the foot, and if it hits something, spawn a decal at that location. The decal should have a normal map to make it look like it’s pressed into the ground (or a grayscale heightmap, and use a material function to generate normal).
As a bonus, you could also use the same anim notify to play footstep sounds.
Thanks a lot for the information; I finally have a place to start ![]()
I’ll give it a try and keep you posted on how it goes.
Thanks again!
