TRUE WOOD | Real Wood Creation System

TRUE WOOD is a procedural wood material system for Unreal Engine 5 that simulates real wood anatomy from the inside out. Trunk structure, growth rings, cell pores, rays, heartwood, and knots... All driven by parameters, not textures. Unlike texture packs or randomized noise-based approaches, every detail is mathematically grounded in how wood actually grows. The result is highly realistic and deeply controllable, giving users precise control over the final wood appearance.

How It Works

  • Choose a preset or Create your own: Start from any of the 35+ species Material Instances, or build from the Master Material

  • Adjust parameters: Dial in trunk diameter, grain direction, ring density, heartwood ratio, knot placement, surface finish, and more

  • Apply or Bake: Apply directly to your mesh for real-time procedural use, or open the included bake level and export 8K textures instantly

TRUE WOOD is a procedural authoring system, not a one-click drag-and-drop texture pack.

Because it is based on structure-driven procedural logic, final results can depend on mesh orientation, object scale, and the coordinate mode used. For many production workflows, the recommended approach is to design the wood procedurally, then bake the final result into textures.

Users looking for the simplest possible static wood material may prefer a traditional texture-based workflow. Users looking for deeper control, variation, and a bake-ready wood creation system will get the most value from TRUE WOOD.

Recommended Workflow

  1. Start from a preset or create a new Material Instance from the Master Material.

  2. Adjust the parameters until the wood matches your target look.

  3. Preview and refine the result directly in Unreal Engine 5.

  4. Apply the material procedurally in real time, or use the included bake pipeline to export production-ready textures.

Notes

TRUE WOOD is primarily a World Position based system, with World, Local, and Tangent options included for different workflows.

Because the material simulates fine internal structure, some extreme parameter combinations may produce minor artifacts depending on scale, viewing distance, or how aggressively the material is pushed.

For users who want a more fixed, lightweight, and pipeline-friendly result, the included bake workflow is the recommended final step.
