datasmith file type not showing when exporting from SketchUP 19

Hi used SKU Pro 19 and try to export quite a simple model to UNREAL ENGINE 5.02
( I don’t have a newer SKU and don’t want the online subscription option!)

In SKU when I click in extension choose Datasmith >export
I get NOTHING in the file type line!

008-4_UE5_export_ALLfloorEXPLODED_ONtopOFeachOTHER_AND_carPARK.udatasmith

and everything in the file name Most unusual and file type is like greyed out

I also not the usual green line, like when I export as fbx
I see a file in UNREAL engine but only the materials
can’t make anything show and build.

Any input, help advise anyone? Thanks

Did you install the latest latest sketchup exporter?

Was the installation successful?

Can we get more details, maybe with screenshots of what is not behaving as usual?

The name of the file is reusing the one from the sketchup file so it seems good.
If I check the doc here you should have a datasmith window with different options.

I do not have a sketchup installed: can you check if it is in the “Windows” options.

Else I would make sure of the following:

I did all this uninstall and re download from EU and reinstall etc…
It still only gives me one EXPORT option in SketchUP Pro 19
that makes the same file ending as in the screen shot
and does not allow to amend the “file type” in the window below the file name.
Installation was marked as “succesful” at the end of the process.

I checked with the dev and it is normal you do not have the .udatasmith on the file type.
And in a similar way it is normal you only have an export button (Direct link was added in 2020.2 forward)

I did a quick export this afternoon + import into UE and it was succesfull.
You still do not get geometry when you import the udatasmith coming from your Sketchup 2019?

I have tried and tried and always get the same result that the “file type” is NOT showing
I wanted to test import all these groups into a imaginary environment.

Something isn’t working with Datasmith plugin I have un and reinstalled several times
it always shows the same way with only one link in extensions

WITHOUT using Datasmith (without loosing the quality?)

I have uploaded my project somehow to show the brake down
in the file explorer that looks like all the groups are devided one by one
and materials (that are very basic in this)

In Sketchup 2019 you will not have the udatasmith option on export. But you can still get the file to be exported properly. You will then get

  • a folder with the texture and the different files for udatasmith, for example the udsmesh I see in your screenshot
  • next to that folder in “E1_Data\0000_3D_everything\Unreal_DATASMITH_bridge” you should have a 010-4_for_export_2_UE5_all_test_assets.udatasmith file. is that correct?

Then in Unreal Editor:

  • you should activate datasmith importer plugin
  • then you can import the udatasmith file directly. The “jpg” or files in the Asset folder cannot be imported directly in UE.

I made a new post here but can’t figure out where it is located. But it’s about the same subject.
I had installed DATASMITH plugin in UE5.03…will try to do this in the next days.

Hi beginner here. Still issues explained lower in my questions about FBX file format.

I finally managed to create the wall structure of several floors.
The only way to keep the aligned for me, was to make a block/column next to it
to see see it all open.
(I also managed to make the directories to see or not the floors and ceilings)

QUESTIONS:

For ceiling and floors: Is it better to have them partially touch the vertical walls?
Is there a way to Pull/push and change a box from one extremity instead of the centre?
(very confusing when one wants to match the grid on the floor or another actor.

UI question:
Idon’t know why and how lost the UI on top as circled in the screen shot.
Is there a way to call this up ( and how does one loose these UI feature?)
I can’t recall when it dissapeared but suddently it was gone. ’
I had to restart the UE5 to see it again.

QUESTION SKU > UE5 with NO Datasmith:

Still having terrible issues importing fbx from SKU so many planes and materials get lost
I get messages that x materials create error and were renamed (that’s fine with me)
although they are all basic SKU materials
But why so many faces are simply not coming over?

I have now my building base and want to import all the custom interior props
I created in SKU with fbx format as someone here told me Datasmith doesn’t work with
SKU 19 ( sorry I can’t get the new one too costly the monthly licence etc)
I got the DS button in my menu
I have installed the plugin in UE5.03 (and as it is not working I try as fbx)

Can one change materials in UE on imported fbx props ?
Must I explode my entire SKU project and delete all the groups and components?

I have checked and checked again and can’t figure out what’s the problem

Hello as a very new user of the Forum I am slow to reply and read. I did install the plugin but someone else told me it is not working with SKU19.
I have a very difficult time to find the right place and mode to upload new questions.
I keep getting this reply and can’t seem to find the right place for a beginner to ask more questions.
I explained my new question about greyed out “rename or F2” and added screen shots
and when I get at the end of creating my new topic I get the message as per screen shot.

Hello I am sorry I am coming back to you directly. I can’t seem to make a new post.

It would be extremely helpful if they could make simple section “beginner questions”. One seems to know several combinations of the right choices to get to make a post.

In the beginning I made my first post (I guess by accident) the follow up was between yourself that replied to my question.

Since then I can seem to get anythin replied to or posting new questions

But I feel I can’t always ask the same person, right?

Now, when I finished my question and want to post to the Forum with a screenshot attached it tells me

“You are not permitted to review the requested resource”

I simply want to know why and when “rename or F2” are greyed out?

In Architecture mode:

I created a square floors and then by rotating slice of the same floor made same length walls.

No I can’t rename “item labels” floors 400x400 into walls.

I know I can start again

You should be able to do a “New topic” + “New Question” to create a new question.

For your renaming issue:
it seems you cannot rename several actors.
You will have to do a utility widget for that:

Also, Datasmith exporters should work on Sketchup 2019.
Just get a version that is closed to your UE version.

If you have UE5.0 take the exporter 5.0.3 and if you have UE5.1 take exporter 5.1. There was a big rework on that one.

All I get in SKU is a file that is called (myFILEnamedatasmith)
but NOT a file which is called (myFILE.(dot)datasmith )

By now I am on 5.2.1
In SKU there is only one window that opens with no option what so ever
I still have NOT managed to link the two via Datasmith
and it is utmost frustrating
considering I worked 1.5 years to design my model space.
16 floors with ±5000 groups
and now I see the FBX has 50.000 meshes and I still can’t SEE a thing on
UE screen but the naked BLANK MODEL lanscape.

I also searching desperately for any URL or PDF or eBOOK ( I don’t mind paying for it)
that would explain the hundreds if not thousand of settings to click/check
during anything to do on UE as simple as importing a large FBX and seeing it near complete.
My first atempt last year was incomplete I was able to walk around in it with my VIVE helmet but naturally would fall through missing floors walk through missing walls
and not see many of my very detailed part of my model like pools a lake etc




Sketchup export should work. Did you try on a smaller model to see if it is working?
I am not using the exporter much but that might take time if your model is too big.

If you are importing FBX are you using the File>Import into Level option? That is recommended way if you have an FBX with a full scene in it. Here is doc on FBX import options FBX Import Options Reference in Unreal Engine | Unreal Engine 5.3 Documentation

50 000 meshes, I am expecting that it might be quite slow in UE. You might have to export your scene in chunks, import it in UE, do optimization before importing the next “chunk”.
And you should rely as much as possible on instancing to reduce number of unique mesh on import Using Datasmith with SketchUp Pro in Unreal Engine | Unreal Engine 5.3 Documentation

In your screenshot it seems something is imported. Was it through FBX or udatasmith?

Somehow I managed to import a bigger piece of my model (by accident I had a double of my project hiding outside my screen)
So re saved and imported it again (half the size now)
with triangulation and double sided faces etc.many pieces appeared outside my model but I managed to move them closer into the near right position.
I think many actors are there but maybe not showing for x reasons
I keep on seeing some when I click on idividual groups
is ther a setting that forces ALL groups to show?
By now I only say the “closed” eye in front of a group to hide it

Somehow in beginning I was able to down from the top onto or into the model
NOW I AM STUCK AGAIN for over 2 hrs !
For some reason I can NOT move UP and swoop into the inside my model
I use shift F and all mouse actions but it won’t let me simply move around as I can in SketchUP so easely.
Something sort of keeps me in an angle that won’t let me look down into my model
I can’t explain it better I tried to google it
I just want to TILT into my object (NOT the special “tilt shift camera effect”)
what’t the secret I don’t have the right lingo to explain such a simple thing and not get some weird video about actors jumping around .
As I go Up or down I want to be able to tilt my view(camera) along Z looking up, down or horizontally. like “ORBIT” in SketchUP


I want to be able to fly into under this glass roof inside the building and look down
into the open center part of my model
