I recently came across a surprising annoying bug and I would like to know if anyone out there has experienced the same. I have two Datasmith files exported from Revit which I individually imported into Unreal using Dataprep just to set up collisions and delete some assets.
When I try to rename any imported actor on the outliner or the content browser, Unreal suddenly freezes for about 3 seconds and my PC restarts, this keeps happening no matter if I create a new project or re-import the assets with a new Datasmith file. I came across a lot of bugs inside Unreal but nothing like this, it´s impossible to keep working with the Engine like this, any suggestions? Thanks
Unreal randomly freezes no matter what I do, sometimes a few minutes after I launched the project, other times after an hour or two. Can’t do anything on screen and PC restarts… I re-installed the engine, created an empty project, problem still persists. I’m really tired of having so many issues everytime I use Unreal, no one can point me in the right direction? Evangelists? Community?
I can’t believe everytime I post a topic in this forum I have no answers whatsoever
I am not aware of people having the same symptoms as what you are describing.
Especially the full computer restart, usually when something goes very wrong it is either the engine that crashes or GPU drivers.
Can you give more details on how it restart? Are you on windows? do you get a blue screen?
Does it behaves the same if you work with other revit files or other content in the engine?
What is your Unreal version? Revit Version?
How big are the scene you are importing?
Could you share with us the log files you will find in your project/saved/logs/ folder
What type of computer do you have? how old is it? which gpu? how much ram? how much space on your drives? Are your OS and GPU drivers up to date?
what do you see when you monitor your resources in the task manager while editing your scene and trying to freeze the application?
I know it’s a really weird bug but that’s how it is. I just came to the conclusion that using Datasmith and trying to update the project for other uses, in my case I wanted to have my VR project which works fine and a duplicate of this but with raytracing on, is just not possible. I can work on my existing project but if I duplicate it, turn off all VR options and turn raytracing on, as soon as I move the camera in the scene the PC restarts.
I re-installed Nvidia drivers, even on safe mode cleaning old ones and making a new fresh install and I used two PC’s, same happens. Datasmith is the culprit as if I go into a level with no Datasmith actors computer doesn’t restart.
I’ll try to answer your questions the best I can:
Can you give more details on how it restart? Are you on windows? do you get a blue screen?
I open project, loads up, as soon as I move the view on the editor the view freezes and 2-3 seconds after my screen goes black into the bios screen, no blue screens. Windows.
Does it behaves the same if you work with other revit files or other content in the engine?
It just happens in this project which I worked for a long time and we wanted to have better quality renders
What is your Unreal version? Revit Version?
4.26.2, Revit 2020, using all proper plugins
How big are the scene you are importing?
That is not the issue. I have several Datasmith imported files into my main level and if I try one or a few the issue persists, if I go to a blank level or I import geometry from my content it’s fine. Problem comes after I Import ANY previously imported Datasmith actor into a new level and move the camera.
Could you share with us the log files you will find in your project/saved/logs/ folder
I gave up trying to use raytracing on the project and deleted the conflicted project. I will need to duplicate it and change a lot of settings to replicate the issue and don’t have the time to do so.
What type of computer do you have? how old is it? which gpu? how much ram? how much space on your drives? Are your OS and GPU drivers up to date?
With all due respect, I don’t tend to ask for help unless I squeezed all options from my side, twice or three times. There’s not a single problem with my PC until I turned this project to a raytracing project. Due to the nature of the issue I’d assumed it was a GPU issue but after replicating the same behaviour on two other PC’s I can say the problem is not the PC
What do you see when you monitor your resources in the task manager while editing your scene and trying to freeze the application?
I’m not trying to freeze the application at any given time, Unreal freezes for two or three seconds as I already said and just goes to a black screen. The task manager behaves as usually and processes are all fine, there’s no abnormality in that. The only thing is that if I keep the task manager open, I go into the project, and just move, the task manager freezes for the same period of time.
As I mentioned, I know for certain the issue is the Datasmith file or actors in the scene when raytracing is turned on. If I create a blank project and re-import the same file it’s fine, but I can’t just do all over again just to have raytracing on. Hope all of this information helps.
Thank you for helping me with these issue and taking the time trying to replicate it. I will try to give you some more information regarding this bug.
I did used DataPrep to import the Datasmith files, the thing is that I imported about 7 different datasmith files from Revit and some of them were re-imported a couplke of times due to changes on the original file.
What I meant by what I said is that if I create an empty level and just move around doesn’t crash, but as soon as I add into the levels tab any level created from the Dataprep process and I move around the computer restarts, it doesn’t even crash it goes directly to restart. So I guess that would be your third option from the three you have me.
I do not use a laptop. I’ve got a Ryzen 9 with a 3080 and 64Gb RAM as working station and a Ryzen 7 with a 2070 at home, both do the same when I replicate what I told you and another computer at work too.
As I told you before, I gave up trying to set up the project for raytracing and GPU lightmass so I went ahead and did it like I’m used to and it works out fine. I just thought it would be worth mentioning to the community that multiple imports of Datasmith files and converting the project to raytracing could cause these issues and maybe should be adressed somehow. I’ve been working extensively with Datasmith since it’s beta release and I’ve found a lot of issues but nothing as major as this one.
