Cycle of Echoes — My solo dev journey from Godot to UE5, and a thank you to the Fab community

Hi, I’m Ivan, a solo developer from Croatia.

I started this game in Godot about a year ago. Eight months in, I had most of the foundations in place: input, camera, characters, gameplay systems, story — the lot. It was going well, but I hit a wall trying to achieve the visual effects I wanted. So I decided to move to Unreal Engine 5.

In about four months, I rebuilt the project in UE5, and a big part of why that was even possible is the Fab community. This post is partly a thank-you to everyone whose work ended up in my project. Your work has helped me bring something to life that would have been much harder to build on my own.

I’ve wanted to make games since I played Duck Hunt on an 8-bit Famicom/NES clone with a keyboard. Since then, I’ve built my own Space Invaders and a few other old-school games as a hobby. Now it’s time to put all those years of experimenting and learning into a game I can share with you all.

The game is Cycle of Echoes, a sci-fi action RPG that combines two worlds: top-down isometric combat and third-person encounters. Think something like the feel of Mass Effect’s shooting inside a Path of Exile-style top-down game. I love both kinds of games, and I hope you’ll enjoy what came out of mixing them.

There’s a skill tree, an exosuit tree, aliens, mechs, sci-fi tech, and, most of all, a story I’ve put a lot into and can’t wait for you to experience.

I’m still developing, and there are a few barriers left to cross, but I’m aiming to have a playable demo ready by the end of 2026 to show you all and give something back to the community that helped me get here. The full release is planned for 2027.

Right now, everything is single-player. Co-op is a goal I’m working toward, but the Steam tags will stay single-player until it actually works.

I’m building this as one person, and I’d love to hear your thoughts. If there’s something you’d like to see in a game like this, let me know. I’m especially interested in what you think of the combat and the transitions between the two camera perspectives.

Here’s the full gameplay trailer, with footage from the actual game build. If you like what you see, please consider wishlisting it on Steam!
