Custom Weapon Improvements

Tell us your feedback. What is working, what is not, and what would you change?

  1. More weapon templates
Right now only a few templates exist (pistol, shotgun, assault rifle, SMG). Please add sniper, rocket launcher, bow, and throwable/grenade templates with their real feel: scope, bullet drop, travel time, splash damage. We had to fake bullet drop and rockets with Verse projectiles, and it’s hard to make those feel like real Fortnite weapons.

  2. Let us choose the ammo type
The ammo type is locked to the template. We had a sniper that had to use AR ammo and a launcher that had to use shotgun shells, so we had to pick the template by its ammo instead of its behaviour. Please add an “Ammo Type” setting on the weapon (light / medium / heavy / shells / rockets / custom or none).

  3. Read and set the magazine from Verse

  • There’s no way to read how many bullets are loaded, so we can’t tell when a gun is empty or reloading.
  • There’s no way to set the loaded ammo. We can’t give a gun with 1 bullet, which is standard in Pillars-style modes. Only the Item Granter’s “Initial Weapon Ammo” can do it, and that doesn’t work for custom weapons or items given from Verse.
  • Please add GetLoadedAmmo / SetLoadedAmmo and reload started / finished events.
  1. Fire and hit events for custom guns built on a template
Many of our custom guns use a real weapon template for the feel and ammo, while Verse adds the special part: a bouncing ball, a balloon blast, a knockback, a custom projectile. For that, Verse needs to know exactly when the real gun fires, but there’s no event for it. So we guess from fire-button presses and ammo changes, and that desyncs constantly:
  • the Verse effect fires during pull-out or reload, when the real gun can’t shoot;
  • or it misses shots the real gun did fire.
We ended up setting shot cost to 0 and “no reload” on many guns just to keep them in step, which breaks normal ammo.

Please add on weapon components:

  • FiredEvent: fires on every real shot, with the aim direction / muzzle transform.
  • HitEvent: target, hit location, headshot yes/no.
  • ReloadStartedEvent / ReloadFinishedEvent.
With these, custom guns built on templates would stay in sync with the real weapon, and we could delete a lot of fragile workaround code.
  1. Charges for custom guns
Items with charges or their own clip (one-use gadgets, charge weapons) can’t show how many charges they have left in Fortnite’s own hotbar. We had to build our own widgets on top of the HUD to show it.
    Please either:
  • add a real charge system to the templates: a “Charges” setting (count, recharge time, use per shot, remove item when empty) that Fortnite tracks and shows on the hotbar slot like real gadgets do; or
  • let us edit the hotbar slot of the custom guns we build, so we can show the charges left ourselves (a number or a bar on the slot).
  1. Custom guns should look and act like real items
  • Custom rarities: let us make our own rarity, with its own colour and glow, and have it show that colour properly everywhere, including the inventory hotbar slot. Today a custom rarity can’t show its colour in the hotbar (only tested in the new hotbar UI).
  • Pickup UI: the pickup prompt for custom guns isn’t the same as for real guns. It doesn’t show the rarity and doesn’t look like the real one, so custom guns feel out of place next to Fortnite weapons.
  • Dropping and picking up: custom items don’t behave like real items in the world:
    • Dropping: they don’t get tossed out of your character smoothly. They just appear next to you.
    • Falling: they don’t fall like real weapons when nothing is under them.
    • Picking up: they don’t fly into your character like a real gun does.
We had to rebuild all of that ourselves in Verse. Custom items should use the same drop, fall and pickup behaviour as real items.

TL;DR
We built 40+ custom guns for one island. Half the work was the guns. The other half was faking everything Fortnite already does for real guns: fire timing, ammo, reloads, rarity, drops, pickups.
Give custom guns the same tools real guns have, and we can spend that time making weapons that are actually fun. We can’t wait to see what creators build with it.

Note: this is from our own testing while building custom weapons for our island (as of October 2026). If any of these already exist and we missed them, we’d love a pointer to the docs.
