Custom Metahuman hair material doesn't work

Hello, I wanted to have a hologram character and made a simple material for it. It works fine on the body but when I put the material on a metahuman’s hair (I use card and mesh only), it doesn’t render leaving the hair as gray. Any ideas?

Unfortunately a metahuman’s hair is unmodifiable as of right now. I’m not sure why, but it’s a known issue/ might be intentional. It can’t be exported, either, it gets left behind when brought to Maya or other modeling software. :frowning: Maybe in the future!

Thanks, good to know! What a weird a thing to disable. Shame, cause metahumans seem very promising but then in trying to use them I keep running into all kinds bizarre problems like this that make it not really worth it.

I think the thing is that they’re supposed to be end-product, as-close-to-normal as possible. But yeah, the issues with trying to apply animation (the hands and elbows are always messed up) are a thing, but that’s also just the UE5 skeleton right now. We’re still in version 5.0 of UE though, and metahumans are still technically late alpha stage at best. They’re promising, yeah, but right now it’s seeming like they’re more of an intellectual toy to explore and play around with than be an overall true asset. At least until they can be moved between modeling programs with no issue, and animation retargeting is better. At least for true animators, if you make every animation from scratch there’s no issue :sweat_smile:
