Creating Paint Layers with MW Auto Material - help!

Hey, first of all I want to say that I know this topic has been brought up - but it never seems it has gotten an answer. And second, I am very new to UE5 so forgive my lack of knowledge.

My question is: How do I apply manual paint layers on my landscape using “MW Auto Material”? Do I need to manage the blueprint in someway, adding/adjusting maybe layer blend node or something else?

I am completely lost here, trying to find any answer on YT and forum here.

Let me know if I can provide with more information, thanks.

Hi Mernes, let me help yu with this. Yes, you can definitely apply manual paint layers using MW Auto Material, but there are a few steps you need to follow to get it working properly.

  1. Assign the MW Auto Material to your landscape.
  2. Open the Landscape mode, go to the Paint tab, and you should see the layer names defined in the material.
  3. For each layer, click the “+” icon and create a Layer Info asset. Choose Weight Blended (recommended unless the material specifies otherwise).
  4. After creating the Layer Infos, you can select a layer and start painting directly on the terrain.

No need to modify the blueprint or material unless you’re adding new custom layers The MW Auto Material is built with support for both auto and manual painting out of the box.

The advice about creating layer infos is often correct, but not here.
I had the same problem and was only able to solve it by omitting the MW Auto material. The problem is that with this material, there’s no way to create layer infos, since the layers aren’t even displayed.

Hi Hirk my fault, I was confused. The reason is because MW Auto Material doesn’t expose the paintable layers by default, it uses an automatic system based on landscape slope and height blending, not manual layer painting.

Apologies for the confusion. I’m now looking for a way to manually modify it

Update:
Bad news. You can’t modify the layers.
The only thing you can do is enter the material and modify the parameters with what comes.

Here’s another video I found that discusses the topic:
