Creating Lifelike Cloth Simulations in Unreal Engine

Simming in engine saves all the round trips, second guessing wind direction, long import times and regular frame rate mismatches as well as crashes.

All the fabric properties and sim settings you’d expect are available in the component and anything more significant is a simple save and re-import in place of the garment asset.

Here’s how to achieve such perfomance of cloth:

  1. Prepare an original prop scan.
  2. Decimate it for easier cloth collision.
  3. Export to OBJ for Atelier.
  4. Make a basic rectangle for the tarp in Atelier with default mat sim properties.
  5. Export the SMD from Atelier to UE to the scene.
  6. Add an wind component to the actor, using the reduced collision mesh and test the sim.
  7. Add a volume axis field will give you a lot of brilliant flexibility for art directing turbulence.
  8. Bake the sim straight to sequencer
  9. Swap the collision mesh for the high poly
